Whoever you are, at least I was invited to talk at the event as a successful grantee.
Whoever you are, at least I was invited to talk at the event as a successful grantee.
However, what really stung was the guy who had to comment out loud: well, it just was not a good grant.
I mentioned that I submitted the grant to a different, national funding scheme, where it was initially also rejected but ultimately I was successful, project is by now published.
Today I was asked to talk at a mentoring event for people preparing an application for the ERC. Of course I spend some time on how I prepared for the successful application. However most of the time I spend on the times when it did not work out, grant was rejected.

Intrigued by a long-standing conundrum in small RNA biologyβhow nuclear Argonaute proteins silence transposons when they *need* target transcription for their own recruitmentβwe studied the piRNA pathway.
And found a hidden RNA-decay axis from Piwi to the RNA exosome.

So deserved! Congratulations, @plaschkalab.bsky.social
I get between 3 and 10 emails like that every day. Many if these students are probably good. But I don't even get to answer all of them because it is such an avalanche and has only gotten worse lately.
Another good one is when it us not my name in the address. I understand that reusing of text blocks is important and saves time.
I get it, 90% of students writing to enquire about a research possibility will use ChatGPT. But at least don't end it with
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
I am just so over these emails that say do little, are so generic and just try to flatter me.
I made an entry in my calendar labelled "Meeting on" I have a slight recollection that it was important and I blocked three hours for it. But I have no idea who I will be talking to, whatever this is about.
