I have put together a handout- it discusses the differences in HS vs uni readings, the impact that has, and suggestions for students doing readings

Feel free to use and circulate to any first years :)

I’d be interested to know! I tutor HS history so the part about textbooks is based off how I perceive them now when I work with year 12 students, rather than an area I’m more specialist in, which is uni teaching

I spoke at the Ceræ conference last year! Lovely group of people to present to

(Am I about to talk myself into putting in an abstract, even though it would involve writing something from scratch? Very possible)

They say:

- the government must not weaken copyright law, and should instead strengthen licensing, transparency & enforcement
- the government should stop prioritising large multinational tech firms

Did I mention this is a continuing post?

Wait, I love the phrasing of ‘first year historians’, really emphasising that they’re doing history from the get go

Why, after all, has a consensus so quickly emerged that we have a crisis in teaching? Is this not more rightly described as a crisis in learning? Or, more aptly, as an attack on learning?

AI ISN'T EDUCATION

Absolutely just all of this

Four Frictions: or, How to Resist AI in Education - Public Books We are calling for resistance to the AI industry’s ongoing capture of higher education.

Big fan of this blogpost I was set for my grad cert

“Whatever small acts of friction one takes, let them make it hard for universities to charge ahead, pouring resources into a technology that none of us asked for. It's only friction that can bring this momentum to a halt.”

Okay I’m going to create a list of key differences and what that means.

I think some of my followers have recent university starters, so if they have any pointers, that’d be good too :)

The Australian Governments responses to international regimes seems somewhat contradictory on the surface, but it’s sits on a broader ideology: peace keeping and not rocking the boat

Doing a grad cert and so putting myself back into being a coursework student at this year 4 of teaching mark has been helpful for that too

Yes absolutely - I joke to my friends that I am a good yardstick for an average student, because I am a good student who loves history but also I have adhd and my focus is fickle - even now I’ll open readings and complain about their length, and I’ve chosen to do this as a career 😂

Everyone teaching first years should look at a year 12 history textbook (and exam) to contextualise where exactly these students have left off when they come into their classrooms

I think that is fairly similar, tbh. (And I think a lot of staff also forget what it’s like to even be a student, but that’s a whole side issue.)

I did make an overt comment to this effect about the difference in audience for their readings in class this week, but stewing over how to use this knowledge to further help them adjust and learn how to approach this difference

03.03.2026 11:04 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 1

*broader audience meaning ‘a larger historian audience’ rather than readings directed necessarily at their exact skill level

03.03.2026 11:01 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

When I first started teaching first years, it had been a *long* time since I’d engaged with high school history. This is helping reinforce how *massive* a step up even just the readings at university level is, let alone the level of analysis and argumentation we ask of them

I currently also tutor year 12 students. Going from tutoring some history year 12s at the end of last year to their peers starting university history this week is making my brain tick

I’m thinking particularly about the jump from textbooks directed to them to articles for a broader audience

if you make a bad historical analogy though, i get it's irritating when actual experts note your analogy was bad. but when I say some science fact wrong and a scientist points it out, it ain't the scientist at fault, even if sometimes they are kinda surly about it.

This will be an intetesting debate, given that it is over 100,000 now and what is going on in the world. More signatures would be helpful.

Pros about my room placement: I once again continue to be blessed by having back to back classes in the same room

Cons about my room placement: 50% of students got lost finding it and neither them nor me had card access to the building
