Angel was born in a secluded part of the ocean to a leafy sea dragon mother and weedy sea dragon father. His mother passed away when he was young, and his father was absent, leaving him and his twin sister, Molly, to be raised for a short while by their older brother. Soon, the twins were on their own, surviving by helping one another learn the ways of the ocean. All mers are born with some ability to perform magic, with most having only a slight amount of magic in their blood. Angel was born with a somewhat above average level of magic that he barely knows how to use outside of making plants grow. Molly received much more magic potential when she was born. Even without the knowledge of how to use it, Molly has a capacity for magic that rivals Overlords. The Overlords of the Sea that know of her desperately want to own her soul to siphon her power for themselves, as a mer's magic power grows concurrently with each soul they own.

One day, Molly is kidnapped by land-dwellers to be sold off on shore. Angel is unable to rescue her in time and becomes determined to find and save her. He resorts to selling his soul to an Overlord for the ability to walk on land, unbeknownst that Valentino had been waiting for the opportunity to use Angel for a chance to one day gain Molly's power. Angel's contract with Valentino allows him to use glamour sourced in the bangles he is enchanted with. On land, he appears as any other two-legged being, with a single, unremovable gold ring as his source of Valentino's magic. He uses his new ability to travel on the surface world to desperately search for his sister in various towns and cities.

Angel quickly learns that his contract with Valentino has certain unavoidable stipulations. Though he can move freely on land, his voice acts as a deadly siren call, charming anyone who might have even a hint of attraction to him. When Angel speaks, nearby listeners lose reason and become unable to resist the urge to sexually assault him. There is no escape from this curse, and the only way to cease an attack is death. Angel is forced to kill many times on his journey, with all souls of the lives he ends transferring to Valentino. Eventually, he becomes numb to it, even toying with people he thinks deserve to die. After years of travelling land and sea and performing favors for Valentino, Angel meets Husk when a ship he is serving as temporary crew on is capsized, lured in by Husk's siren song. Angel is the only survivor, as he changes to his mer form as soon as his body touches water. He meets Husk as the other is scavenging the wreckage, and is immediately smitten. Husk is unlike anyone Angel has met in a long time-reserved, guarded, and completely uninterested in Angel. It makes Angel want to get to know him, especially since, as a mer, Husk is unaffected by Angel's curse.

Angel begins visiting Husk's grotto whenever time allows. He is fascinated and amused by Husk's collection of treasures and trinkets, even stealing a pendant necklace from Husk's trove during an early visit, hoping it would catch his attention. As Angel spends more time with Husk, he begins to feel alive in a way he hasn't since Molly was taken. He finds himself singing when he is alone and decorates himself in jewels that remind him of Husk. Husk's grotto becomes a "safe space" to Angel, much to Husk's chagrin. Animosity forms between Angel and Husk as both long for what the other has. They bicker often, usually prompted by Angel's teasing or Husk's blunt words. However, as Angel begins to see firsthand how Husk's curse affects him, he grows empathetic to Husk's plight to leave his prison. Despite his exhaustion at travelling in search of his sister, Angel sometimes thinks it might not be so bad if Husk was by his side. Little does he know that Husk holds the key to finding Molly's location...
