In our unit this week, Asia Decolonised? we are reading about legacies of violence out of the atomic bombings, and the consequent bombings on the Korean Peninsula, and now it is unfortunately even more relevant for the 45 students.
AustraliaβDO NOT go there, do not.
Do not go to war with a madman.
In his 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised voters that he would end wars, not start them. Over the past year, he has instead ordered military strikes in seven nations. His appetite for military intervention grows with the eating.

This is critically important for our future. The struggle over ethical parameters for AI use will determine whether authoritarian states can enact mass surveillance of their populations at granular level and allow machines to decide to kill people.

Discovered today that Instagram had turned on (without my opt-in) automatic AUDIO translation of any reel that shows up in my feed not in English USING AI TO MIMIC THE SPEAKERβS VOICE and WOW it was creepy and upsetting.
You can turn it off in βLanguage & Translationsβ in Settings. π

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientistβbecause the person felt she did didnβt deserve the recognition.

I just noticed this book thatβs coming out in July. Iβll need to check it out, definitely!

In a historic joint action, the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), the Jewish Council of Australia, and the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), have lodged a formal legal complaint to have Israeli President Isaac Herzog arrested or barred from entering Australia.

White racist literally threw a bomb at black people to kill them, apparently not a sufficient cause to have a moral panic, special envoy, national introspection, royal commission, terrorism declaration, new laws, 1,000 op-eds in The Australian. We're struggling to identify why that might be.
Reporting on a #heatwave? This is how you do it.

Monday and the start of a second week of being prevented from working by my employer, the University of Sheffield. Management has decided that massive damage to staff morale, student experience and the universityβs reputation is worth it in a futile attempt to break the union. Shame on them.
A moment of silence that ends with someone shouting "fuck ICE!" and the crowd roaring in response
Crowd gathered for Invasion Day rally in Naarm, with the Imperial Hotel and Windsor Hotel in the background.
I can't manage a march today but the Invasion Day speeches were as inspiring as ever, and as I left the large crowd was still growing. The people who want truth, treaty and justice are far greater in number than the fascists.
The burning of fossil fuels has led to the cancellation of an Invasion Day event in Adelaide, South Australia
