1/2 Tobacco and alcohol both increase cancer risk by damaging our DNA. But used together they elevate cancer risk further. NE GP Dr David Cummins is warning about the link to oesophageal cancer, with around 390 people diagnosed in our region each year.
2/2 There is more support to quit than ever before – from stop smoking services to quit aids and online tools.
So many local people are benefitting, and we’re proud to showcase their success. It’s all on our regional quitting hub FreshQuit.co.uk #NoRegrets

1/2 Two days until #NoSmokingDay.
We’re celebrating Colin, 35, from Newcastle. Quitting smoking has transformed his life - better health, money saved, and more time with his kids. 💛
#SmokeFreeFuture
Every cigarette takes 20 minutes off life.

We welcome the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and the ambition it signals.
To truly deliver a #SmokeFreeFuture, it must also be backed by a national tobacco control plan with a clear roadmap set out. This APPG report sets out what else is needed..

Congratulations to Sharon Hodgson MP @sharonhodgsonmp.bsky.social on being appointed as the Minister for Public Health and Prevention.
We look forward to working together towards a smokefree future.
3/3 We hope that a ban on filters will be part of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and will be listening in again to today's session in the House of Lords.
2/3 Filters are harmful for health and the environment. This blog from @ashorguk.bsky.social explains all you need to know about the Great Cigarette Filter Fraud 🔽

1/3 Tobacco companies sold people a lie that filters made smoking safer. But filters don’t protect smokers from cancer-causing chemicals, and cigarette butts are the world’s no.1 littered item.
Proud to see Joanna Feeney, Stop Smoking System Strategic Manager at Fresh, supporting the NHS Reddit AMA on quitting smoking. Every quit attempt matters. With the right support, you’re far more likely to stop for good. You’ve got the power – and the NHS has the experts to help 💪

1/2 In the NE there is excellent support available for quitting with thanks to the continued investment across all the local authorities into stop smoking services. So many local people are benefitting from these and we are delighted to showcase so many successful quitters.
20 years ago, we made public places smokefree. Now, it’s time to keep going. 💪 A must-read from @ashorguk.bsky.social – and proud that NE MP Sharon Hodgson is part of this. A #SmokeFreeFuture is needed, wanted and workable 👇
Organised criminals are behind the supply of most of the illegal tobacco that gets sold in NE communities - in the same way they are behind the supply of drugs.

1/2 February is Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Month. The risk is linked to both tobacco and alcohol - and much higher for people who both smoke and drink.
Our #SmokingSurvivors campaign highlights the serious harm smoking can cause, including cancer.
We welcome the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and the ambition it signals. To truly deliver a #SmokeFreeFuture, it must also be backed by a national tobacco control plan with a clear roadmap set out.

1/2 Smoking costs England £43.7 billion a year - harming our health, economy, NHS and communities.
In the North East alone, it’s nearly £2 billion a year. Meanwhile, Big Tobacco is profiting from getting more people hooked on a lethal addiction every year.

Nobody who starts smoking young ever expects to smoke for life, or to be told they have cancer as a result. The House of Lords vote last night supporting the Tobacco and Vapes Bill is a historic step towards ending the death & disease from smoking for the next generation. #SmokefreeGeneration
The House of Lords has just voted for the Smokefree Generation 🎉
246 peers rejected replacing it with an age of sale of 21, versus just 78 in favour.
A fantastic result.
...✅ 69% of North East adults & 69% of 11–17s support this. Parliament is taking a decisive step towards a smokefree UK. Read our reaction here 🔽
