I think about 1985. At the Law Bodleian probably. I remember being told that a transatlantic phone call was carrying the data, making it prohibitively expensive to run. It certainly wasn't in use there: this was just a demo.
I remember seeing a demo of Lexis when I was a student. I think the Oxford Uni law department put it on, with Colin Tapper, an early adopter of IT solutions, organising it. I'm fairly sure that there was access to Law Reports, the AER, I think.
Today's expedition was to the Wainhouse Tower near Halifax. At 253 ft it's the UK's tallest folly, & 369 steps take you up to what Yorkshire folk call a grand view.
Memorial to Sir Thomas - not Grim, as the explanatory display carefully tells us.
Also a good reminder of migrants who were welcome: a memorial to 40 Bermudan soldiers who died in WW1.
The East Window has a nautical theme, as you might expect.
So then to Grimsby Minster, a fine church with a long history. There is some fine stained glass.
A less successful piece of public sculpture from Grimsby: "Human Mumuration". It's an interesting idea with local people having posed for the silhouettes, but from a distance it looks like graffiti, and close up lacks any real impact. It's high up - presumably to avoid vandalism - which doesn't help
A visit to Grimsby yesterday. First, some public sculpture: the Fisherman's Memorial, erected in memory of "the fishermen of Grimsby who sailed to distant waters never to return".
EJH is a good choice in those circumstances.
Photo from yesterday's walk of Scout Hall, near Shibden. Reputedly a "calendar house". 1 end obviously weatherproof and occupied; the remainder is a work in progress. It was built by a silk merchant: obsessed with flying, he died after launching himself from a local hill on homemade wings.
Delighted to see Norman already here.
Interesting car spotted on our walk today.
