Ha! showing off the tattoos, but yes maybe the model? amazing photograph, so much going onβI love the floating portrait in the back too
came across this beautiful photograph and didnβt believe it was real at firstβthe tattoo felt too contemporary but it is in fact his social security number!!
Dorothea Lange, unemployed lumber worker, Aug 1939.
#OnThisDay in 1985, @newyorker.com published this stunning illustration by Eugene Mihaesco titled βCity Walkways in the Sky,β depicting Hunter Collegeβs iconic Skybridge over 68th Street and Lexington Avenue. #TheMoreYouKnow #HunterPride π β¨οΈ π
A piece of paper with oil stains, showing two drawings of the same man's face, with two bodies at different angles also on the sheet
as an art historian who also loves drawing, it's a great pedagogical tool seeing examples where artists try again, as in this drawing by Cézanne showing Valabrègue twice, with very different face shapes
read it this morningβbrilliant! so excited to see the rest

Painted portrait of a bearded man in close-up, with a grey backdrop
Painted portrait of a bearded man in close-up
Photograph of Antony Valabrègue
absolutely love Cézanne's three versions of Anthony Valabrègue and the various changes he makes
favorite details:
- the strange Schiele-esque head shape in the first
- the jagged brushstrokes in the forehead in the second
- the red nose and highlights of the beard in the third
A photograph of snowdrops
a prelude to spring, the winter flowering snow drops are visible again!!
diagram showing how a film set might simulate an underwater view, with the arrangement (from left to right) of a film camera, an aquarium, a woman dressed as a mermaid, and three sheets
my article on Georges MΓ©liΓ¨s and aquariumsβthe first thing published from my dissertationβis now out open access at @jcmsjournal.bsky.social!!
read on to see how fairy tale grottoes, Jules Verne's science fiction, and water infrastructure are all connected!!!

a product of the journey: bsky.app/profile/alex...
with the four hour delay at the outset, more than 24 hours from hotel to apartment! but I managed to sleep at the start, which opened up the rest to be a slightly boring but doable journey (writing, reading a book, watching Emily in Paris, drawing on my iPad...the works!)
incredible to see an essay with 54 images including this Alma-Tadema painting, that the author admits "the chances that Picasso ever laid eyes on it are almost nil"
re-reading notes on Steinberg's "The Philosophical Brothel" that I made in 2020 during my oral exam prep feels like reading another person's thoughts. very spooky...
the treacherous walk across Central Park was a bit better todayβ¦
Painting by Paul CΓ©zanne, a self-portrait of a bald and bearded man at an easel.
working on a possible CΓ©zanne essay and keep encountering really stunning works, like this self-portrait c. 1890.
I love the pale pastel colors on the wall behind him, and how they crop up in his cheeks and forehead
I'm maybe ready for this not to be true...winter wonderland in Vermont skiing vs. daily commuting in this are very different...
just three more weeks left??
A photo of a bearded man in a beanie with snowy trees in the background
A snowman in the shape of the Statue of Liberty
back to our regularly scheduled programming!!
just made my (treacherous!) trek across Central Park back to the Met
brought my iPad and my Apple Pencilβpassing the time and thinking about the imminent return of Bridgerton!!
t-6 hours til New York!
thank you! at the halfway mark and feeling rested and productive (and well provisioned with snacks!)
photograph of ice and snow on a train window, with a white blurry landscape outside
kind of at the halfway markβenjoying these abstractions
fortunately both!!
$250? I think tonightβs was $150 when I last checked. not great dollars/hour haha but happy to be moving
illustration of a train car with men wearing top hats, and woman in hats and carrying fans in a richly decorated interior, from Long Island Of Today, 1884
photo of a bearded man on a train, unlike the 19th century denizens, no top hat. Terrible industrial lighting above
Illustration of a poster showing a map for the trip from Chicago to New York and Boston
cosplaying 19th-century travel by taking a 20 hour train trip from Chicago to New York! grew the beard, just need a top hat!!
currently annoying (but someday funny) end to CAA
last day of CAA! see some of you maybe at the βSuitcase Modernismβ panel!
Happy World Aquarium Day!!
he figures into my tentative (and presently unruly) volcano project! great self-portrait!
Thanks to everyone who came out to the panel yesterdayβit was a full house, which was amazing (but also sorry for the issues finding a place to stand)
the conversation between the panelists was lovely and I really appreciated the Q&A!
