Aerial view on the 60 plots of the TWINWIN experiment surrounded by grass and agricultural fields. The plots vary in color that represent the different undersown treatments. In the background is a road, buildings and forests. The sky is blue with some white clouds.
🚨📃🧪 New paper out: "Impacts of diverse undersown cover crops on seasonal soil microbial properties". Rashmi Shrestha used the #TWINWIN experiment to show that undersowing crops with diverse plant mixtures, particularly including legumes has beneficial effects on soil microbial life and function 1/6
- Miksi tuota 👇 päätöstä on -ihan perustellusti- kyseenalaistettu?
Tämä on rautalankaa viäntävä ketju sinulle joka mietit mistä tässä mesotaan. Lähdetäänpäs kävelylle metsään... 🧵 1/15 #metsä #luonto #Suomi

Radiocarbon analysis reveals underestimation of soil organic carbon persistence in new-generation soil models: Brunmayr et al. gmd.copernicus.org/articles/17/...
Or in fact, up to 80 cm depth… 😁
How do the fungal communities look like in conventional and organic farming compared to natural meadow? Laura Häkkinen dug deep into this topic, up to 70 cm! First PhD paper and Editor’s choice in FEMS! Have a look: academic.oup.com/femsec/artic...
I would like to join, too!
Happy World Soil Day! And Welcome to Finnish Soil Science days in January 7-8th 2025. Scientific programme launched today (mostly in Finnish but also English stuff). www.maapera.fi

Wow, looks great!
New monolith redox paper by Kronberg et al: ’Simultaneous effects of cover crops on C inputs, and on N and water dynamics…emphasize the importance of incorporating vegetation into studies exploring the impacts of waterlogging on coupled dynamics of Fe and C. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I have an open PhD position that will focus on process modeling and parameter inference in soil microbial processes (methane and nitrogen cycle, stable isotope experiments & natural abundance, soil gas transport).
I would say 1) protect the existing SOC with improved management, soils tend to loose C. 2) use always the best practises, if lucky, you can sequester some SOC! The column had the right message but e.g. the saturation or N limitation story may not be essential as reaching saturation is minimal risk…
A paper out where MAOC/POC is compared with RockEval thermal analysis. Great work by Amicie Delahaie and the team, including the EJP Soil FREACs consortium. 'both methods can be seen as complementary and potentially relevant for soil monitoring'
