Under our Surf Protected Areas program, we create networks of legally protected surf breaks.
We currently have SPA projects in Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Azores.
For more information about SPAs and the process of legally protecting waves go to: www.savethewaves.org/span/
Greece and Sweden are leading the way. Is it France's turn next?

absolutely agree with you @jngriffy.bsky.social !
Ana Manero’s research highlights the critical need to recognize the value of surfing ecosystems and calls for the implementation of targeted environmental protection mechanisms to safeguard them.🌊
Despite their significance, these ecosystems are frequently neglected in legislation, policies, and planning guidelines. They are increasingly threatened by climate change and human activities (urban development, mass tourism, or competing land and water uses for example.)
Surfing ecosystems—comprising surf breaks and their surrounding environments—are essential spaces that provide substantial wellbeing, cultural, ecological, and economic benefits to millions of surfers and thousands of coastal communities globally.

Co-occurrence of surf breaks and carbon-dense ecosystems suggests opportunities for coastal conservation - Society for Conservation Biology via WILEY
https://conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/csp2.13193
A novel study published today in Conservation Science and Practice has found that the forests, mangroves and marshes surrounding surf breaks store almost 90 Mt (million metric tonnes) of climate-stabilizing “irrecoverable carbon,” making these coastal locations essential #climate allies.

The Global Fishing Legislative Database, by Ian Urbina and The Outlaw Ocean Project, is a much-needed tool for exploring the laws and regulations governing fishing—a tool I would have loved to have when navigating the maze of legislation related to IUU fishing

This is a HUGE win for our ocean. Norway has paused senseless plans to allow deep-sea mining to wreck its seabed.
Make no mistake, commercial deep-sea mining would be catastrophic for vital & vulnerable ocean life. We must #DefendTheDeep at all costs ✊🪸

"Le sujet des forêts marines de la zone mésophotique peut sembler pointu, et réservé à une petite communauté scientifique. En réalité, ces espaces sous-marins situés entre 30 et 200m de profondeur sont aussi importants que les forêts terrestres et nous concernent tous".
