It's officially publication day for our book, The Way Out. Sam and I have worked on this since we first put our heads together in 2019, and it's fair to say that the context shifted under our feet as we were writing and thinking.

The cool thing about teaching utilitarianism is that each time I do, I get a little closer to convincing myself it's correct
Such a funny headline - don't they realise Starmer IS the mistake? www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Very grateful to the ECPR political theory jury for this wonderful news!
In a new article in @poppublicsphere.bsky.social I propose an institution reform to make representative government less oligarchic: having elected politicians held accountable by randomly selected "Constituency Juries"
If youβre around Munich in a couple of weeks and want to discuss oligarchy and corporatism with me please join us to this workshop! βπΌ

Iβve said it before, Iβll say it again, and I know I speak for millions of people up and down this country:

It's a bit of a shame everyone decided to turn against the Enlightenment just when it's most needed, isn't it....
Saddened by the death of Pope Francis, who was a wonderful force for good. I hope the Catholic Church stays true to his vision of economic and environmental justice.
Here's a short essay I wrote a decade ago on Francis's radical economic vision in Laudato Si':

Liberals who argue that fascists such as Trump and Le Pen should not be barred from running elections by legal means (and must instead be 'defeated democratically') seem to forget that fascists have no intent to win democratically (and break the law precisely to assure that they won't be defeated).
Trump calls it Liberation Day. Expecting it to be a bit more like Liz Truss day.
Ever forced to find cuts to welfare, never forced to raise taxes.
Few things beat discussing socialism with such great comrades and friends. Huge thanks to @tatianallaguno.bsky.social @vharting.bsky.social and @jkandiyali.bsky.social

Limited government has in practice always been about limiting government services, while increasing government force and brutality. Exactly the wrong way round.

I always struggle a little to explain my students why Marxists are right about freedom in the capitalist state. Jeff Bezos does it so much better.

Wow this paper is fantastic. An economic explanation for Haslanger's theory of race, of DuBois on the psychological wage, and of the different racial stratifications of different societies.
Sometimes I read an econ paper that makes me wish I became an economist...

Trump's inauguration marks a seismic political shift in Silicon Valley - a complete capitulation to the far right and the beginning of a new era of 'tech for evil': trashing the environment, military AI, misinformation and rampant cronyism.
