Home Court Heroes Montreal has a record number of NBA players, but it’s been a long road to get here.

This was originally going to be a chapter in my book, "The Golden Generation," but got cut due to space and narrative. Quebec is an important part of the larger Canadian basketball picture, with 5 NBA players, 2 pro teams, and a deep pipeline of talent:

I wrote the cover story for Maisonneuve Magazine. It's about the history of basketball in Montreal, from Trevor Williams to Sylvia Sweeney to Chris Boucher and Lu Dort.

It explores themes of race, sex, class and language in a province that historically favoured hockey to basketball..

From Naismith to SGA: 'The Golden Generation' tells Canada’s men’s basketball story When Oren Weisfeld set out to write about the story of Canada’s national men’s basketball team, he wasn’t sure how many of the sport’s biggest names would agree to talk.

Reading "The Golden Generation" by @orenweisfeld.bsky.social taught me so much about the history of Canada's men's basketball team. It's an incredibly detailed book and I really enjoyed speaking to him about writing it www.timescolonist.com/national-spo...

Pretty cool to see RJ Barrett scoring over one of his childhood role models, Andrew Wiggins.

Here's what RJ told me about Wiggins during our convo for the upcoming book:

I strongly believe coaching and management come second to the players when it comes to the (historical) success of Team Canada

Unfortunate news for continuity, but I can guarantee you that Shai, NAW, RJ, Nembhard, Brooks and co. are upset about '24 and want revenge.

good question. Their GM, Denise Dignard, also retired recently, so the first priority is finding a new GM. They have an AmeriCup this summer in June 2025, so I would imagine that they at least want a GM by then and probably a head coach too.
