Don’t get me wrong. It’s gratifying that most of the comments out there are supportive (and aghast at Iger/Bergman)—but the naysayers still get under my skin. I should be over this but this news has evidently set me back several stages in my grief process.

Don’t try to pretend it’s an absolute just because you personally don’t want to see him again.

Maybe he never died. Maybe he was projecting himself like Luke and is still at the bottom of the pit. Maybe some mystical property of the dyad is keeping him tied to this realm. There are a million ways to play it. Like, come on now.

So many people on about “But he’s already dead, there’s no coming back from that!” There is actually nothing in the text of the movie that confirms that. He disappears. So? We never see a force ghost. It’s ambiguous. Which means there are valid avenues for his return.

The reason “humanities types” (I include social scientists here) believe AI is an existential threat is because it’s jeopardizing our societal ability to think, analyze & write, & <gestures at everything> this is an existential threat to democracy & society. It’s not just about our teaching or jobs.
