Thrilled to share this adventure on how zebrafish elongates its notochord! ๐ŸŸ Kudos to Carlos Camacho de la Macorra and @bensteventon.bsky.social for leading it. Alberto Ceccarelli and I had so much fun modelling & uncovering unexpected predictionsโ€ฆ A nice mix of maths ๐Ÿ“, computing ๐Ÿ’ป & experiments ๐Ÿ”ฌ!

Local control of cellular proliferation underlies neuromast regeneration in zebrafish - PubMed Biological systems are never in equilibrium, yet they maintain stability in the face of continuous external disturbances. A prime example of this is organ regeneration, during which organs are reliably rebuilt through controlled cellular proliferation. In this study, we employ a cell-based computati โ€ฆ

New publication from the lab! Very excited for a the new work in collaboration with Osvaldo Chara.

How do living systems remain stable ? We found a local feedback that acts like a quorum-sensing system, ensuring organs regrow to the right size.

The article shows that regeneration of a key part of the sensory nervous system in zebrafish can be achieved by a mechanism compatible with local control. Please get in touch if you have any questions!

Comparison of the model simulations with experiments on regenerating neuromasts previously subjected to laser ablation suggests that our hypothetical proliferation switches are a robust mechanism of regeneration control.

This very simple mechanism is capable of isotropic regeneration after partial ablation in the mantle & sustentacular cells, consistent with experimental data.

Our results show that the tissue-wide regenerative response of the neuromast is consistent with a delayed proliferation switch modulated by the the number of neighbors.

We parameterized the CPM using our recent estimates of cell-cell interactions within the neuromast using our new method of Mechanical Stress Inference ForSys!

Interestingly, these interactions allow the integrity of the organ to be maintained.

How do we get such an ordered structure after the chaos of laser ablation? We decided to investigate this problem quantitatively by using a Cellular Potts Model (CPM).

Neuromasts are known to have a remarkable regenerative capacity! Hernรกn's lab has previously shown that after laser ablation of up to 90% of a neuromast, sustentacular & mantle cells undergo an ordered proliferation-dependent regenerative response.
