and it allows us to spend consciously to support really cool local initiatives that help build up networks that value inclusion and diversity that we can all benefit from.
When we purchase this manure, we are recognising the value of meaningful purposeful activity/participation and learning opportunities for everyone in our community,
These bags are $5 each; there is a money box on the inside of the seed library/cupboard door for both this, and koha for seedlings.
One of the aspects of this is that it is bagged up by some of our local community members being supported in a vocational activity to develop skills and earn some money to put towards a group activity.
There are still some sacks of mixed horse/donkey manure on the stall. This manure is less than 6 months old, so is ideal to pop through a compost cycle.
Thank you to my father for sending through some Kakabeak seeds from his garden.
Thank you to Joe for taking a package of seed down to their local seed library.

a resourced environment, an environment that respects and honors privacy and independence, while maintaining a net that ensures people experience inclusion, belonging, place, and space, where we are safe, where we are valued, and where our humanness is celebrated.
essentially practised the whole fake it till you make it, driven by a desire for my kids to grow up with a safety network and community, I'm seeing in my adulthood the vital importance of authentic local community development, and how it can facilitate all of us to live in a safe environment,
my stomach drops momentarily when theres a knock at the door, and I have a split second of dread before embarking on a trip to a shop. However, having learned how to make and answer phone calls, go into new spaces and meet new people,
The funniest part of all of this, is that even 20 years ago, I was terrified of making phone calls or meeting anyone I didnt know. I'm still the same now, if my phone rings, I do want to frisbee it through the lounge window,
something to contribute to as they are able, to take from as they need, and allows us all to build up a community where we can share in what is common to us all.
This small, simple activity of saving and sharing seeds can be used to set up small, but important opportunities to build up community, to create non physical connection, that enables people to experience meaningful belonging,
There will be opportunities for seedsaving workshops, or even just low key meet ups over winter to package up seeds, in the same way that they have already set up a knitting group and a crafters space.
and everyone who visits the library, sharing locally sown, grown and harvested seed, ensuring locally saved , seed that is in the process of adapting with our environment and climate, will be available.
Across the road from where Anoushka is doing g this workshop, is the new local community library, Te Whata o Kaituna. This is where one of the librarians is leading in the creation of an embroidered piece that will function as another seed library, available be used by anyone
My eldest is involved in a street art project, that is being run by local artists that she has admired for the past few years. One of the artists leading the project also painted the Bowling Club, where a seed library is installed and fed into by people from all different backgrounds
(twice to drop seeds in at Woof cafe, twice to the main library and once to the Regeant theatre). In my mind, community is more about the slow, quiet networking that gets built up over time. And it's not necessarily tangible.
The irony of this discussion is im not a social type of person, i'm not enthusiastic about big groups, certainly dont function well in crowds, and I can count on one hand the number of times I drove into the centre of town in 2025
from my own perspective, highlights a deficit. Neighborhoods and communities where we connect, network, and support.
in Aotearoa we already utilize personal alarms for people who have risk factors for falls and injuries associated with living alone, allowing people to contact an ambulance if they become stuck in bed or on the floor. This app had a wee bit different feel, though, that whilst meets a needs,
I read an article on Wednesday about this new app available thats quickly become viral, called 'are you dead'. www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/5... . I am not undermining the safety and security that these initiatives provide;
All through history, this human story has been dependent on our ability as social beings, our ability to communicate, to empathize, to work together for collective benefit.
people who have made significant contributions to human knowledge, and understanding, none of us are here independently of the paths paved by those before us. In this sense, from this perspective, we are each part of a continuing human story.
understanding nature, leading to the establishment of the scientific method. We proceeded, as a spieces, to build a grounding in philosophy, which has enabled us to understand ethics, morals, values. We all of us stand on the shoulders of giants,
Once we established agriculture, we were able, as a species, to more reliably settle in one place, building on our understanding of seasons, and plant reproduction, to manage our basic needs, and streamline labor, freeing up time to spend on the development of culture, of art, of
pottery, and alcohol (this lecture discusses the evence that the agricultural revolution was spearheaded by the demand in early human culture for alcohol: youtu.be/OLqgtyFyJ1o?...). What i am getting at is our formative discovery was that we progressed further as we built community.
I think a lot about our deep prehistory, how our coevolution with plants and seed saving essentially allow us to survive on the light emitted from our star through the complexity of photosynthesis. How incredibly ancient this activity is, alongside weaving,
we have different upbringings, different interests, different favourite tv shows, favourite colors, favourite plants and flowers, often drawing meaning from our unique experiences and adventures, but we share what it is to be human.
