My book just got passed by the final reviewer!!! Look for ‘Mortality and Measurement’ this year! If anyone would like a sneak peak, let me know. Happy to travel or zoom to hang out and discuss race, statistics, medicine, and empire.

Your granddad's friend is Patrick Leigh Fermor? He seems to me good evidence that if you are a morally good person, writing well is a big force multiplier. And if you want to be good, maybe reading Fermor is more effective than reading Horace.

In new book, NPR's Emily Feng explores identity after China refused to let her return In 2022, the Chinese government told NPR's Emily Feng she was no longer welcome in China, where she'd lived and reported from for seven years. She says she hasn't lost claim to her Chinese identity.

“[Chinese] is a language that I've worked really, really hard to master, and it's a world that will never leave me. That's also part of the point of this book, is that being Chinese is not confined to the boundaries of the People's Republic of China." www.npr.org/transcripts/...

I always thought that getting your kid to school should be the thing you write in red on your calendar, your main goal and achievement of the day. In my case, it usually was.

The Schomburg Tintype collection has a lot of digital copies of early photographs of African Americans and Indigenous Americans from mid #c19th.

Some really evocative portraits in there.

again, a strange thing about the renewed enthusiasm for imperialism is that very few enthusiasts for imperial violence in any of these countries actually want to be the soldiers.

A narrow alleyway, whose sidewalks, parked cars, buildings, and trees are covered in a thick blanket of snow. On the left of the alley is a light-colored, two-story institutional building of some sort; straight ahead is a brick and metal gate with a sign reading “1865,” a few people standing at the gate, and beyond that, a parklike area filled with snow-frosted trees.

Why can’t we be kind? (A Pollyanna’s case for the nice review.) Every so often here in the Bookverse, someone hitches up their britches and pronounces criticism “dead.” They lament a media ecosystem driven by publicists, and actual or perceived read…

The case for kind book criticism.
