We're so, so many years deep into failing to prevent the most obvious, predictable, stupid things from happening. It is a very thin comfort that our justice systems are getting faster at punishing them once deployed at scale.

Will NSO’s US Lobbying Pay Off Under Trump? Now, with Friedman, a seasoned Trump insider, at its helm, NSO might finally achieve its long-awaited US comeback, writes Vas Panagiotopoulos.

β€œNever before has a spyware manufacturer invested such extensive resources or retained so many external advisers β€” lobbyists, lawyers, publicists, former diplomats and senior officials β€” to influence US democratic decision-making,” writes Tech Policy Press fellow Vas Panagiotopoulos.

"AI" and predictive markets like to present statistical possibilities as certainties, to the detriment of peoples' ability to understand and grapple with uncertainty.

Good thing that the world's, uhm, uncertain.

Can Artists Help Shape American Cities Again?

Trump helps MAGA influencers flee Middle East war zone on private jet Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz, dogwalker Sarah Daither, former lobbyist Jay Footlik, and others managed to escape on a private plane thanks to the White House.

The White House has helped MAGA influencers escape the Middle East on a private jet while more than a million ordinary Americans are still trapped with no way out.

So, in launching a huge bombing campaign on Iran they apparently didn't plan for:

- Who takes over;
- Interceptor shortages from sustained drone retaliation;
- How to defend US bases in the region;
- Threats to ships in the Strait of Hormuz; and
- How to evacuate Americans with airspace closed.

How have crime rates in the United States changed over the last 50 years? Both violent and property crime are far below their 1990s peak, but some crimes see periodic rises.

Looking at the 2024 crime figures, it's absolutely insane how Trump, tech billionaires, and centrist pundits fooled everyone into thinking Biden had turned the U.S. into some Hobbesian hellscape.

50-year lows for violent crime, armed robbery, property crime. Second-lowest homicide rate.

All I can think about is Jeff Bezos saying that he slashed jobs at the Washington Post β€” including those of foreign correspondents in the Middle East β€” based on "the data," and a few weeks later a whole war breaks out in the Middle East that these laid off folks would have covered as true experts.

Data. Making everything "data" did this.

AI just makes it easier to abstract everything that data. There is always a speaker, AI just makes you look for it.

This thread on Alito's outrageously misrepresentation of the facts in the NY voting rights case is so damning. Alito's account was misleading to the point of falsity. And there's nothing anybody can do about it. He gets to toss around bogus claims without any consequence.

According to PEW, teens in households making under $75K are more likely to use chatbots for help with all or most schoolwork. I read a comment on another platform that said this is amazing news because we are "finally going to close the achievement gap." That is not how I would interpret this data.

FWIW, this is also what his "leadership" feels like at home. Just taking out whole social sectors and support infrastructures until he realizes why they exist - and then forcing its value through his cult of personality until it's dead or useless.
