They also found that backyard poultry flocks were infected earlier than commercial farms, suggesting the backyard poultry could act as early warning sentinels.

They find at least 9 independent introductions into Atlantic and Pacific flyways from Eurasia, followed by a rapid continent-scale spread driven mainly by migratory waterfowl. Many other species were infected, but mostly as dead-end hosts.

A great work by our webinar speaker @lhmoncla.bsky.social and her team. They used phylodynamic analyses of H5N1 to reconstruct how the 2021–2023 North American HPAI outbreak started and spread across flyways, host groups, and agriculture.
