Weβve inherited a great collection of aquatic inverts from a friend, and colleague Gerry Mackie. It represents decades of curiosity, care, and commitment to teaching and learning. I hope it will spark the same sense of wonder that Gerry shared so generously! @integrativebiology.bsky.social

ALT: a close up of a jellyfish on the ground
This semester, students explored invertebrates through quirky and iconic videos from Isabella Rossellini, Sir David Attenborough and Ze Frank! They then pitched an invertebrate to star in a βWild and Weird Invertebrates"series. The results were AMAZING and wildly creative! @alexsmithants.bsky.social

Animal phylogeny where tips are phyla. Histogram on right hand side (log-scale) of the number of named species in that phylum (blue) and whether that phylum contained a student's favourite species at the start (red) or end of the term (yellow). Sponges grabbed people's imagination this year and likely the start of term enthusiasm for "cephalochordata" was misplaced enthusiasm for Cephalopods.
Phylogeny produced in R by adapting code from Casey Dunn's https://bitbucket.org/caseywdunn/animal-genomes/src/master/
To track hoped-for shifts in engagement towards previously under-appreciated taxa, we ask the #ZOO2700 students at the start and the end of their intro to #invertebrate morphology & evolution term about their favorite #species of invertebrate and to which phylum it belongs. @sherihincks.bsky.social

Nooooo Lucy! The six-pound, 25-year-old lobster saw her shadow- 6 more weeks of winter. I prefer the Wiarton Willies prognostication - no shadow- an early spring.
