Why Australia’s “Grammy-rush” is good news for local listening
In addition to obvious economic benefits, growing overseas audiences for our artists could also address growing Americanisation here at home.
"Does Australia really want to passively accept a more American culture at this historic moment, given that it will lead us towards an even more American politics?"
Great piece on Aus music by artist manager John Watson, @thepointau.bsky.social

“The Albanese government promised a once-in-a-generation fix to Australia’s broken environment laws. Instead, the draft National Environmental Standards put up for public comment over summer look worryingly familiar,” writes Louise Morris.

Oh look, Australia has a brand new coal mine proposal.
Just after committing to phase out fossil fuels.
What will @MurrayWatt do with this?

It wasn’t the laws that were too weak to stop those projects, it was the ministers
The Prime Minister is betting that by 2028 people will forget the North West Shelf and EPBC backflips, but it would be a brave backbencher willing to make that same bet.
It wasnt our enviro laws that were too weak to protect the Skate or stop the North West Shelf, it was our Ministers.
Thats why Labor is trying to get the Coalition to help them water them down…to save Enviro Ministers the embarrassment of always saying yes #climate

The Government is trying to push through changes that will weaken our environment laws.
This is the same Government that changed environment laws to protect the toxic salmon industry, and continues to approve fossil fuels for decades to come.

Who needs world-changing, life-saving science when you've got rugby league
What does it say about us when we let CSIRO whither on the vine?
Australia is one of the richest countries on Earth, if we can afford $600m for a PNG footy team, we can certainly afford to properly fund our premier scientific agency

Cutting red tape shows that when we ‘trust the market’ taxpayers usually end up footing the bill
The point.com.au
Good regulation is good for productivity growth. Lack of regulation is driving inefficiency.
Poorly regulated building markets led to debacles like the cracking in Opal Towers and flammable cladding being expensively replaced across the country

It's the perfect time for the government to defy the mining lobbies
Long-gone are the days when the mining industry could claim to have the power to topple prime ministers and governments.
The mining lobby is weak right now.
Perfect time for strong env laws, @albomp.bsky.social
Last week the Minerals Council and gas lobby literally threw a party and no one (important) turned up.

Yes, Australia can curb fossil fuel exports | Richard Denniss
YouTube video by The Australia Institute
Just a lil reminder to listen to this by @richarddenniss.bsky.social at @australiainstitute.org.au
It feels obvious but it's remarkable how rarely we talk about the details of what curbing fossil fuel exports *actually looks like* - and exactly how feasible it is.

Honest Government Ad | Carbon Capture & Storage
YouTube video by thejuicemedia
Here is a timely reminder from @thejuicemedia.com on how pathetically ineffective carbon capture and storage is. The same carbon capture and storage that the Libs wanna pump more money into, in their fantasy scenario, but they should form a government ever again

Our federal government continues to prioritise the gas industry over regional towns that are being devastated by climate disasters.
Australia’s environmental laws need to stop the approval of new coal and gas projects.

Opinion: Canada, don’t make the same mistake with LNG that Australia did
LNG exports exposed Australians to high global gas prices, allowed gas producers to price gouge and drained the country of low-cost gas reserves
Warning Canada!
Big Gas promised Australians LNG exports would mean plenty of low cost gas and enormous economic benefits.
None of it was true.
Instead we got gas shortages, manufacturing closures higher energy bills and few economic benefits.
