Caravan News๐Ÿช๐Ÿซ

I just published Version 1.6. The main update is that the source data for CAMELS-AUS was upgraded to CAMELS-AUS v2. This means more basins (561 vs 222) and more recent streamflow data (2022 vs 2014).

๐Ÿ” Why GRIT is a game-changer:
๐Ÿ“ Delivers 30m resolution across 19 million km of rivers and streams
๐Ÿค– Enables automatic updates using new satellite imagery and elevation data
๐Ÿงญ Supports vector-based, global-scale river analysis
๐Ÿง  Powers AI/ML modeling in hydrology and environmental science

๐ŸŒŽ Unlike existing datasets that simplify rivers into single-threaded, convergent flows based on elevation, GRIT captures both converging and diverging flow patterns โ€” a crucial advance for understanding river systems, especially in flood-prone, densely populated areas.

Weโ€™re thrilled to share GRIT, the worldโ€™s first high-resolution global river network that maps how rivers both merge and split across the landscape โ€” now published in Water Resources Research (Wortmann et al., 2025).

Many congratulations to Bailey Anderson on a successful PhD defence! Sincere thanks to external examiner Ross Woods, internal Linda Speight, & co-supervisor @simondadson.bsky.social. Bailey's thesis focused on large-sample approaches to assess streamflow sensitivity to climate and land cover change.

How many independent climate models are there? (How) can we reliably estimate uncertainty in future predictions and projections of climate? Which models to select for downscaling or impact studies?
