A vibrant infrared image of Jupiter. The planet is characterized by thick, horizontal blue and orange bands. Two prominent, glowing white oval storms-the Great Red Spot and a smaller companion-are positioned in the lower hemisphere. The poles and the edges of the planet glow with a saturated red-orange hue, highlighting the heat and atmospheric depth of the gas giant.

This week’s image is of our neighbor Jupiter! Gemini North’s NIRI with adaptive optics captured this IR view of Jupiter, highlighting features like the Great Red Spot in bluer tones than in optical wavelengths. Check out the 🧵 for more papers on hot Jupiters!

The Orion Nebula dominates the majority of the frame. It's shape consists of a milky-white shell surrounding a deep red center. There are teal blue stars dotting throughout the image.

Here's an HOO look at the Orion Nebula (M42). I've been wanting to shoot this for years but never had a horizon line that would cooperate with me.

Throughout the image are swirls of background dust, which contrast subtly against the deeper background of the night sky. There are some stars dotting throughout the image, but compared to the nebula they are lost in the background.

I also processed an SHO version of the Orion Nebula. I know that HOO usually wins the show but I love how this one turned out. The blues, greens, and golds are just a wildly different view than you normally see for it and I'm here for it.

A high‑resolution overhead view of a rocky, desert‑like landscape on Mars. The surface is mostly reddish‑brown with patches of darker blue‑grey tones. Total lunar eclipse, the Blood Moon taken with a 4 inch telescope at 3:45am PST on March 3, 2026. Moon is a beautil coppery color.

Despite all the clouds, there was a moment when the Blood Moon shone through. Taken mid-eclipse from southern interior, BC. Using a 4 inch refracting telescope on March 3, 3:45am PST.

A photo of the partially eclipsed moon, with just a sliver at it's lower right still in sunlight and overexposed with no detail. The rest of the moon is a gradient of increasing reddish color across it's middle, and very dark in it's upper left. Even as dark as it is, features are still visible, such as craters and dark seas or mare. Even some large craters are visible still. The moon is still in a segment of the Earth's shadow called the "Penumbra", Latin for 'almost shadow'. The deepest dark portion of the Earths shadow is called the "Umbra", Latin for 'shadow'. In the penumbra, direct sunlight no longer reaches the moon to reflect back strongly, as in the bright part to the lower right of the moon. The light that reflects back to us is refracted, or bent through our atmosphere, and are longer redder wavelengths. Like the light from all the Earth's sunsets and sunrises coloring the moon. A light haze of cloud is visible all around the moon, and a few faint stars shine in the blacker areas around the edges of the cloudiness.

I've found it's best to include clouds in scenes I decide to photograph. I mean, this is the PNW after all... 🌧️
