That is always such a difficult situation. With Sooba, the lymph nodes in his neck were where it took hold so they swelled up and started interfering with his breathing. I will admit I broke down and ugly cried more than a few times before the end- I truly wish the best for you and your floof.

Basically we just gave him some steroids to help him fight it off for a while and keep him comfortable- I couldn't afford to try to give real treatment. The vet estimated he had about 4-6 weeks before the steroids would no longer be effective enough, but he made it 7 weeks before it was time.

I feel for you. My 13 year old void loaf got hit with lymphoma, passed a bit over a year ago. I hope for the best for you and Talon.

Are we falling out of love with nonfiction?
In the early 2020s, readers flocked to books to explain political turbulence. But is the world now too grim to read about – and are podcasters taking the place of authors?
my view on this is that publishers should stop it with the 80k wordcount obsession, so many contemporary non-fic books are obviously 40-50k pieces of work stretched to the extent that they become very boring to read - just let people write cheaper, shorter books! www.theguardian.com/books/2025/d...

It is why I get the life story dump from strangers in the grocery store. With how my attention span works, if someone has my attention they get ALL of it. People aren't used to that much connection or consideration, to a degree that is heart-wrenching. All I am doing is listening, and yet...

Why science GCSEs matter more than we think in a post-truth age
New research suggests GCSE science builds thinking skills that matter far beyond the lab.
This. One of my biggest frustrations with my own science education as a kid is that it didn't teach the philosophy of evidence base, just rote learning facts and why we know they are true.

...why would you try to make a point about using water for positive environmental change by creating a graphic using genAI? You know, the technology infamous for its excessive water use? It really undermines what sincerity you might have.

Bar graph comparing emissions from Grok's fossil-fuelled data centres to avoided emissions from Tesla's products for the years 2023 and 2024.
Comparison of emissions from manufacturing xAI's chatbot responses (5,127,553 tonnes CO2e) versus all Tesla products (1,056,000 tonnes CO2e) with respective analyses.
*New short blog* - finally (with help) got around to getting a total estimate of Grok's climate pollution 🫠
- Once all fossil gas online, = to between half and all of Tesla's ANNUAL GLOBAL avoided emissions
- Currently, 5x the emissions of Tesla's total manufacturing

having written about how banning web scrapers from a code forge i host made it usable again and saved ~60€/y in power bill, let me tell you:
you cannot fathom the offloaded cost of GenAI on small web hosts. it is a veritable distributed denial of service to the entire web. Every web admin sees it.

This is eugenics. Genocide. An attack on science, medical ethics, bodily autonomy, and human rights.
Where is the outcry from the biomedical community? Trans people aren't just abstract patients and research participants: We're your friends, family, and co-workers.

Nope. We don't have to do this. The courageous act would be to refuse. Jingoist slop like this is an enormous factor in why the US has been terrorizing the world for decades. There are no heroes bombing Iran.

Reminder:
You will focus on what you can control and release the rest.
Your fear is understandable, but constantly worrying about the worst-case scenario isnt helpful.
You will try to be kind and gentle with yourself.
I'm proud of you

They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.

Important reminder of the devastation wrought by the Musk/DOGE dismantling of USAID. Hundreds of thousands dead, many more to come. The greatest crime of the 21st century (so far).

Jesus FUCKING Christ.
I was convinced we had just been somehow overrepresented in the media compounded by constitutional observers being killed by ICE. I had no idea the gut feeling of ICE being fucking everywhere in the twin cities was backed up by this kind of data.

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.
If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.
If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

Hackers Expose Age-Verification Software Powering Surveillance Web
Three hacktivists tried to find a workaround to Discord’s age-verification software. Instead, they found its frontend exposed to the open internet.
Oops. Turns out Persona, Discord’s age-verification service, was secretly screening selfies against government watchlists AND accessible by the feds. It's backed by Peter Thiel.
