I first learned CPR in 2002. Best practices have changed since but the advice has not: get training. The more folks with the skill, the higher the likelihood that anyone survives a cardiac event. Year 24 today, back in for my recert. Have never had to perform CPR in the wild, hope I never will.
That said: definitely consider a session or two with a trainer to learn good form (to protect your body!) and gym etiquette (to protect your community). If you’re local to me: I’ll take you and show you the basics. I’m not a coach, but I do know my way around and can help you get started.
With new years approaching: the real ones will NEVER shame you for coming to the gym. Even if you don’t know how to do the things. Even if you’re not in the best shape you’ve ever been. We are happy to see you moving your body and chasing your goals.
One thing that I’ve become increasingly certain of over the course of this year:
As an academic, I do not have (and never will have) a responsibility to teach students to use Gen AI ‘ethically’ (as if that were possible).
The idea that academics should be doing this is a blight on the sector.
The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was “unanimous.” That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.

In doing final MS prep for Yassified Shakespeare, we've been leaning heavily on the assistance of my extraordinary RA. Today, he gave us one of the highest compliments we could receive:
When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.

What a glorious day for us all to learn, simultaneously, just how many of our educational servers rely on Amazon to function correctly. There's a metaphor for higher-level thinking crumbling at the foundation because of capitalism here, but frankly I'm just grateful I can get my grading done now.
I LOVE Taylor and the new album has been on repeat for me but… Tay: please call me to dramaturge the next time you want to write a song with a Shakespeare reference so we can get the facts right. It tweaks me every time you say Ophelia was “the eldest daughter.”
Did I spend a chunk of yesterday making a murder board to visualize and prep my tenure case? ….maybe.
In other news: COVER REVEAL! The next book is on its way! I was so lucky to be able to edit this collection with the incomparable Valerie Clayman Pye. This was the only image I wanted for the cover, and we were ECSTATIC to be able to use it.

I converted a commercially bound paperback, so I didn’t technically bind it myself but I did everything short of the actual binding.
It is totally normal to spend a weekend converting your book into an epic bespoke leather-bound tome of awesomeness, right? @sunypress.bsky.social made me an amazing cover, but this one is also pretty cool.

Does new course syllabus prep engender crippling imposter syndrome in everyone or is it just me?
Syllabus prep: Directing. Never have I put a book down so quickly and omitted it from consideration as the Directing textbook I just dropped like a bad habit when it had a full page describing how to stage character deaths by firearm and blade without a single reference to using a fight director.
Is there a better day than new book cover day? (No we’re not ready to release it yet but TRUST ME IT’S GORGEOUS!!!)
