I first learned CPR in 2002. Best practices have changed since but the advice has not: get training. The more folks with the skill, the higher the likelihood that anyone survives a cardiac event. Year 24 today, back in for my recert. Have never had to perform CPR in the wild, hope I never will.
That said: definitely consider a session or two with a trainer to learn good form (to protect your body!) and gym etiquette (to protect your community). If youβre local to me: Iβll take you and show you the basics. Iβm not a coach, but I do know my way around and can help you get started.
With new years approaching: the real ones will NEVER shame you for coming to the gym. Even if you donβt know how to do the things. Even if youβre not in the best shape youβve ever been. We are happy to see you moving your body and chasing your goals.
One thing that Iβve become increasingly certain of over the course of this year:
As an academic, I do not have (and never will have) a responsibility to teach students to use Gen AI βethicallyβ (as if that were possible).
The idea that academics should be doing this is a blight on the sector.
The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was βunanimous.β That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.
This is amazing.
This is a really good one.
New favorite quiz question: what's a fact about [major historical figure/play/whatever] that sounds fake but is actually real?
The first review of Theatres of Value is out!
"Rosvally brings these men and women back to life, writing about them in ways that make the reader feel as if Rosvally is writing about her friends." So many thanks to @jesshamlet.bsky.social

And just like that Yassified Shakespeare is off to the press!
For the record: I do not recommend submitting a book ms, finalizing page proofs for an edited collection, making final revisions to a post-peer-review essay, co-moderating a conference group, & completing a major meet in the same month.
Todayβs update from the front: a footnote that is actually in Yassified Shakespeare (book MS gets turned in Monday!)
Screenshot of a comment from MS word by LΓ³ri Fejes that says "the number of times I mumble under my breath (with utmost respect) "I cannot with these two""
In doing final MS prep for Yassified Shakespeare, we've been leaning heavily on the assistance of my extraordinary RA. Today, he gave us one of the highest compliments we could receive:
When a chatbot gets something wrong, itβs not because it made an error. Itβs because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.
Screenshot of a footnote reading: "It is not. Indiana Jones' name is Henry Walton Jones Jr."
Are you PUMPED to see how this footnote made its way into academic discourse!? Get ready!
What a glorious day for us all to learn, simultaneously, just how many of our educational servers rely on Amazon to function correctly. There's a metaphor for higher-level thinking crumbling at the foundation because of capitalism here, but frankly I'm just grateful I can get my grading done now.
I LOVE Taylor and the new album has been on repeat for me butβ¦ Tay: please call me to dramaturge the next time you want to write a song with a Shakespeare reference so we can get the facts right. It tweaks me every time you say Ophelia was βthe eldest daughter.β
Did I spend a chunk of yesterday making a murder board to visualize and prep my tenure case? β¦.maybe.
In other news: COVER REVEAL! The next book is on its way! I was so lucky to be able to edit this collection with the incomparable Valerie Clayman Pye. This was the only image I wanted for the cover, and we were ECSTATIC to be able to use it.
Tenure dossier preparation is upon me. Accordingly: if you've taught any of my articles/books/chapters/podcasts/blogs, used any material I've created in classwork, or have spotted a review of any of it, could you please reach out and let me know? Thank you.
Thank you!!! It was fun! I sense more projects in my future.
I converted a commercially bound paperback, so I didnβt technically bind it myself but I did everything short of the actual binding.
It is totally normal to spend a weekend converting your book into an epic bespoke leather-bound tome of awesomeness, right? @sunypress.bsky.social made me an amazing cover, but this one is also pretty cool.
After pointing out that Mike has left our DSLR camera sitting on the bed.
Mike: what could possibly happen?
Me: really? You donβt think Felix is fully capable of pulling a Venkman?
Me: I'm just trying to write a lesson plan for my directing class, guys.
The internet: TAYLOR AND TRAVIS GOT ENGAGED OMG ENGAGEMENT PICS!
Me: later, please bring me pics of the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen's beard first. It's more important right now.
Things I have said to my cat and maybe also to my students: βdude, do not put the sword in your mouth. Stop chewing on my sword.β
Does new course syllabus prep engender crippling imposter syndrome in everyone or is it just me?
Syllabus prep: Directing. Never have I put a book down so quickly and omitted it from consideration as the Directing textbook I just dropped like a bad habit when it had a full page describing how to stage character deaths by firearm and blade without a single reference to using a fight director.
Is there a better day than new book cover day? (No weβre not ready to release it yet but TRUST ME ITβS GORGEOUS!!!)
