There is so much we still don’t know about how prions are transported through the environment, but this knowledge is vital for containing fatal diseases such as Chronic Wasting Disease. I can’t wait to see where we go from here in further uncovering environmental prion dynamics

Prion Partitioning and Persistence in Environmental Waters
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting cervids. CWD is caused by infectious prions, which can enter the environment through bodily fluids or the carcasses of infe...
I’m very excited to share our paper, Prion Partitioning and Persistence in Environmental Waters.
We demonstrate that infectious prions preferentially partition to fine sediments in surface waters, providing a framework to further study hydrological prion transport.

Figure of stacked histograms showing temperature anomalies by decade (1880s–2020s) relative to the 1951–1980 baseline. Three columns display data for global, land, and ocean temperatures. Blue tones depicting colder than base period temperatures dominate the earlier decades, shifting to red tones indicating warm temperatures in the recent decades, highlighting warming trends.
Global, land, and ocean temperature change distributions since the 1880s. A very clear warming signal in all of them.
Data: NASA GISS / GISTEMP (base period: 1951–1980).

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

Mostly preaching to the choir here, but a group of us moderators over on Reddit's AskScience put together kind of an explainer for the implications of some of the attacks on science funding and infrastructure in the US if it's useful for anyone else to share:

I just got a report that a terminated employee from another agency got their job back after replying to the termination email with their good perf appraisal.
If you are still connected, might as well try. It makes for good documentation if nothing else.
Let me know. So far only this one anecdote.

We are alarmed by the Administration’s actions to freeze science funding and eliminate DEI efforts and climate change initiatives, which go against AGU’s mission and harms our members. We must unite to address these changes, beginning by hearing from you.

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously.
Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause."
They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.

Per an NIH source:
“Discussions with colleagues have suggested that if the universities all come together and raise hell about the delays to funding caused by not holding meetings, that might move the needle. From every state. There are well-funded universities in red states that will be impacted.”

National Science Foundation freezes grant review in response to Trump executive orders
The National Science Foundation has canceled all grant review panels this week. It's unclear how long the pause could last.
NPR cites an NSF statement now “NSF spokesperson said that all review panels will be rescheduled. ‘This will allow the agency to make the best use of everyone's time and resources as we continue to develop guidance to ensure compliance with the recent executive orders.’”
