Page one. There are three panels. The top two are taking place in the same place, the same moment, but are separated in the middle to allude to the disconnect between Tenar and Therru. Therru stares, not playing as a young girl should, at her dolphin figurine. Burn scars cover the entire right side of her body. In the other panel, Tenar is hand sewing a red dress for Therru, looking concerned for the little girl. In the bottom panel, which takes up most of the bottom part of the page, some time has passed and Tenar is holding the finished dress. Around her we can see the trappings of their everyday life: shoes, jackets, slippers, baskets, etc. Tenar gazes at the dress softly, with love.
Page two. There are six panels. Therru comes into the main living space from another room wearing the red dress with a white smock over it. In the next panel, Tenar smiles at her lovingly, “Now then, you look beautiful.” The next two panels shrink a bit, trapping Therru in slightly smaller boxes than the ones that Tenar occupies on this page. Therru looks at the dress, and then looks away, clearly feeling some manner of discomfort. In the next panel Tenar gazes at her sadly, recognizing that Therru is having a difficult time embracing this dress due to her past. She tries to assure her, “You are beautiful.”
Page three. Tenar approaches Therru, and lowers herself to the ground. “Listen to me Therru, come here” In the next panel Therru continues not to meet Tenar’s eye as Tenar says, “Therru….” The next panel takes up the entire width of the page. For a moment they exist in a space of color and feeling. Therru stands silently while Tenar kneels, the both of them encroached on either side by darkness. Tenar takes a deep, sad breath, and in the page’s final panel, she begins to speak, “You have scars, ugly scars, because an ugly, evil thing was done to you.”
