Are cortical rhythms entrained by speech or simply evoked?

TL;DR:
Speech acoustics already carry the nested theta–gamma structure seen in auditory cortex.
Using advanced signal analyses, stereoEEG data, and speech corpora (17 languages).

This made the use of Representational Similarity Analysis (RSA) more explainable and transparent, letting us see more clearly which brain data aligns with theoretical models 🙃
Interesting note: we recycled bubbles, a method from vision psychophysics, to identify which neurons are the most important in the encoding of identities!
Work led by Margherita Giamundo’s postdoc work, just out in Science Advances!
Using fMRI-guided electrophysiology in macaques, she discovered neurons in the anterior temporal lobe that respond specifically to voice identity!

Do birds tune their songs to their hearing?
Is there tight coevolution between avian vocal signals and hearing-or do signallers and perceivers evolve more loosely?
It turns out perfect tuning is not required...

To avoid the problem to some extent, should neuroscience focus on the neural system without worrying about how that neural system is implemented at the low level? This is what the Tortoise said to Achilles 🙃 & I don't know what this would mean either for neuroscience: not to focus on implementation?

Happy to announce my first postdoc preprint at @bathellierlab.bsky.social on offset responses in the auditory system! We found although these responses are found throughout the central auditory system, they provide richer information about elapsed sounds in the auditory cortex.
