Do not let this world tell you a different one isn’t possible. Do not let this world tell you that some lives are worth less than others. Do not let this world push you towards apathy and inaction.

Because in a world that is fuelled by capitalism and colonialism, taking care of people and communities is a radical act of defiance against a system that wants to see us all fall in line and remain silent in the face of injustice.

A rare six-planet alignment is lighting up the sky this week. Here's how to see it. Step outside just after sunset and you may catch an unusual sight: six planets strung across the sky in a gentle arc. The phenomenonβ€”often dubbed a β€œplanetary parade”—isn’t a cosmic spectacle in the way the name suggests. Astronomers don’t consider these alignments rare or physically meaningful. But they do offer something compelling: a chance to see nearly half the solar system at once. Here’s how to see this month’s alignment, featuring Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. What is a planetary parade? A planetary parade occurs when multiple planets are visible in the sky at the same time. Depending on the configuration, that might mean four, five, or even six planets appearing above the horizon simultaneously. Despite the dramatic name, these alignments aren’t exceptionally rare. The last six-planet parade occurred in January 2025, and a four-planet lineup followed in August 2025. What makes each one feel special is simply the chance to see so many worlds in a single sweep of sky. Visually, a planetary parade doesn’t look like a ruler-straight line of bright dots in the night sky. Instead, the planets form a loose arc, sometimes spreading out from horizon to horizon. Some planets may glow brightly, like...

So many opportunities for home grown lower carbon bio-materials in a more sustainable future.

And yet these opportunities are often ignored in discussions about land use and net zero.

Revisiting the Nova Scotia Flax to Linen Ecosystem As I sit on another long European train ride, I’m reflecting on the journey undertaken two years ago to explore β€˜bioregional resilience through bast fibres’ supported by a Churchill fellowship. I am remembering the knowledge I absorbed and wonderful people encountered as I travel to join nine women leading community flax/linen projects across Europe. Meeting at the centrally situated Berlin Textile Coop, we will discuss over several days how to collaborate, find funding and share learnings together. Putting together a quick presentation to explain my own community project – Totnes Grows Flax, (soon to be Devon Grows Flax) I reflect on the reasoning behind its creation. Beyond the highly inspiration projects such as the Swedish 1 sqm flax, Berta’s flax and The Linen Project, there lies a pragmatic systems perspective when combined with Liflad’s other projects. Our vital infrastructure in development – to turn flax seed into cloth using vertically integrated micro manufacturing processes – makes sense within a community rediscovering the beauty, heritage and utility of flax processing using traditional, artisan, hand tool methods. Community projects can open the door to much wider interests and engagement. In the Churchill report, I described a Nova Scotia Flax to linen ecosystem...

From chemistry to regeneration: Agriculture's next transformation has begun (commentary) Just as the Green Revolution shifted farming from sun and soil to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, we are now seeing a new revolution, one of returning to an agriculture based on biology rather than chemistry. The current, chemically dependent model has produced a lot of food but at great cost to soil health, biodiversity and livelihoods. β€œSociety must recognize the truth: we cannot continue to poison our environment in the name of food production, and regeneration is the only viable future,” a new op-ed argues. This post is a commentary. The views expressed are those of the author, not necessarily of Mongabay. See All Key Ideas Agriculture is on the cusp of its most profound transformation in a century. Just as the Green Revolution shifted farming from sun and soil to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, we are just beginning another revolution: returning to an agriculture based on biology rather than chemistry. This isn’t new knowledge; rather, it’s wisdom refined over millennia that we temporarily abandoned. If we embrace it, this transition could restore ecosystems, strengthen rural economies, and secure a healthier food future for all. For most of human history, farming relied on natural systems: the symbiosis between plants, soil...
