Photo of Prof. Dr. Sven Apel wearing glasses and a maroon polo shirt, standing with arms crossed against a light wall with sunlight casting striped shadows. Saarland Informatics Campus logo rests at the top left, while the Saarland University logo rests on the top right. A banner at the bottom reads: βSven Apel becomes the 11th ACM Fellow of SaarbrΓΌcken.β
π SaarbrΓΌcken now houses 11 ACM Fellows β about 1/3 of all ACM Fellows in Germany β highest of any location nationwide. This year, only 3 new Fellows in Germany were named, and Saarland University software engineering professor Sven Apel was one!
Congrats, Prof. Apel! π

Biggest difference (that I experience) in publishing and writing in Germany vs US might be that now I get LOTS of reviews asking why I chose to collect data in Germany... π«€. Nobody questioned when I wrote papers on data from US schools.

The top half shows a screenshot of a mindful math learning tool with a forest-themed interface and algebra exercises, overlaid with a square portrait of Prof. Dr. Tomohiro Nagashima against a neutral background. The bottom half shows the AlgeSpace learning tool interface with a balance-scale algebra exercise, overlaid with a rectangular group photo of the members of LaLa Lab. Below the images, a large banner reads: "The Henriette Herz Fellowship: bringing researchers together for AI that supports, not dictates."
Are you an international researcher interested in ethical AI in education? Good news β Prof. Nagashima is hiring another Postdoc (as a Humboldt Fellow) to LaLa Lab!

Indiana public colleges cut almost 20% of degrees
Public Indiana colleges and universities have eliminated 19 percent of their degree programs to meet requirements added to the stateβs budget, according to the Commission for Higher Education.
1/ I'm feeling real pain at the cuts to Indiana public universities, especially IU, especially cogsci. These are some of the biggest brains in cogsci and edupsych in the world, but why do *I* care? I'll tell you what they've done *for me, personally*. β΅

Come to my keynote tomorrow at the first official @queerinai.com workshop at #NAACL2025 to hear about how trans languaging is complex and cool, and how this makes it extra difficult to process computationally. I will have SO many juicy examples!
