Nobody likes it except that one guy who gets to change the really big clock because they let him swing from all the gears while he does it. The Old Clock Master they call him. He gets up there on those gears and gets to swinging and whooping and he's the only one who likes this.

The wagon isnโ€™t much more spacious inside, itโ€™s the same size car, but it has a roof rack and even a trailer hitch for anything the little 1.8L 4-cylinder can pull ๐Ÿฅฐ

Last year when my โ€˜01 Saturn S-series sedan got too rusty underneath to trust on the road, I started haunting Marketplace and replaced it with a โ€˜97 Saturn S-series wagon (which had spent winters in a barn or in Florida so is decades behind on the rust). There might be a Fit out there for you still.

When I disparage pickup trucks, Rangers and Tacomas and their ilk are exempt. They have to do a lot less work in order to justify their much smaller footprint, and usually they do more.

Book Group

The last Thursday of every month was Book Group,โ€จwhen the books would gather together to discuss Brian.

โ€œItโ€™s no fun here any more,โ€ remarked Bleak House, glumly.โ€จโ€œWhy doesnโ€™t he read us?โ€ whined the Grapes of Wrath. โ€œIt makes me so angry!โ€ โ€จโ€œIโ€™m sure he only bought me so he can show me off to his friends,โ€โ€จcomplained Ulysses, in a stream of self-consciousness.

โ€œI bet he canโ€™t even remember my name, The Idiot,โ€โ€จmuttered a voice from the Russian literature section.โ€จโ€œThatโ€™s because he avoids you like The Plague,โ€ said another.โ€จโ€œCโ€™est vrai!โ€ came a cry. โ€œIt is like I do not exist.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s not give up on him yet.โ€ It was Brave New World.โ€จAfter some Persuasion, they agreed to give him one last chance.โ€จโ€œBe quiet!โ€ cried Waiting for Godot with Great Expectations.โ€จโ€œHere he comes now!โ€

Brian entered the room, with his phone.โ€จHe sat down and watched some videos of baby pandas falling over.โ€จAfter an hour or so, he started googling cats dressed as celebrities.

On the shelf, the books waited with uncracked spines,โ€จtheir silence speaking volumes.

By โ€œfoggyโ€ I mean precisely that at first theyโ€™re a barely discernible suggestion, getting imperceptibly clearer until suddenly they resolve as whole and solid as if there was never any fog to begin with.

The slow, laborious joy of remembering a song you havenโ€™t thought of in years, piece by piece over the course of a day instead of immediately rushing to look up the lyrics.
Iโ€™ve been awash in memories, many unrelated but just as foggy, all night.
I need to give my brain time to work more often.

Hereโ€™s the admiration your brag was expecting! As a new parent constantly racking my brain for songs I know enough words to sing for the kiddo, the longer the better, I looked up American Pie to try to learn it and had to give up two or three verses in.

The literal genie is a very common trope: when you "make a wish" you get exactly what you wish for.

This is one of the explicit limits on the spell Wish from D&D - often called the most powerful spell in the game because its effect is "make a wish and it comes true."

I feel like Iโ€™m being called out here (along with most people, really) and instead of getting mad Iโ€™m going to try really hard to follow the advice in the reply and become an easier person to get along with.

Two important points:
- NOT looking to argue, just to learn the opinion of anyone who cares to weigh in
- I enjoyed most of the Hyperion Cantos collection I picked up from a book exchange shelf, mostly objecting to the way the sex scenes were written, but Iโ€™ve learned Iโ€™m not a very critical reader.

Iโ€™m curious about your comparison to Philip Pullman. I first read His Dark Materials as a teenager and havenโ€™t reread in years; Iโ€™m interested in seeing peopleโ€™s actual critical opinions outside โ€œzomg life changing and incredibleโ€ and โ€œmerely picking up these books will guarantee damnation.โ€

Thereโ€™s a bit like that in Terry Pratchettโ€™s Maskerade, where the famous aria about how hard it is for the hero to leave his lover ends up translating to โ€œthis damn door sticks, the sign says pull but maybe it should be marked push.โ€
