'Labour action on extreme poverty can stop voters going Green' - LabourList Reforming international debt isn't just the right thing to do. It can also help Labour avert a catastrophe for progressive politics at home.

Our vice-chair Libby Smith and executive member @roulinkhondoker.bsky.social write in @labourlist.bsky.social today. Reflecting on the Gorton & Denton result, they argue action to tackle extreme poverty is part of rebuilding Labour’s progressive coalition.

How debt relief could reverse the devastating consequences of UK aid cuts Exclusive: New analysis finds that debt relief for developing countries – which the UK could play a key role in orchestrating – could more than offset the impact of UK aid cuts. Nick Ferris reports

Exclusive on new analysis I did for @cafod.bsky.social in @the-independent.com finding that debt relief could help counteract devastating impacts of this govt’s ODA cuts, announced one year ago today. Hundreds of millions of lives & livelihoods are on the line. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Today in Parliament, we - alongside our friends at @cafod.bsky.social - co-hosted the panel ‘British Leadership on Global Financial Reform: The UK’s Role as a Global Debt and Tax Superpower’. It was a rich cross-party discussion that couldn’t be more timely ahead of the UK hosting the G20 in 2027.

🚨 Breaking:

The UK could lose up to £5.2bn if it scraps the Digital Services Tax on Big Tech – enough to pay for training 128,000 new NHS nurses.

Polling shows 67% back enforcing laws on Big Tech, even if it strains relations with Trump.

Rachel Reeves rejects claims of £50bn ‘black hole’ in finances The chancellor hit back at the idea that the government faces so large a gap between spending and tax income.

As far as I can tell, and as you would expect, NIESR do not mention a "50bn black hole" anywhere in their report or commentary. Who is the BBC quoting here? No indication of where the phrase has come from, or what it refers to. Nor is there a link to the interview. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Millionaire exodus did not occur, study reveals - Tax Justice Network The number of millionaires widely reported in the news to be leaving countries in "exodus" represented near-0% of all millionaires.

The UK govt softened tax reforms on the superrich because of a widely reported “exodus” of millionaires fleeing the UK.

Our new study w/ @patmillsuk.bsky.social & @taxjusticeuk.bsky.social shows that the "exodus" was a complete fiction.

A photo of Pope Leo XIV waving and a quote:

"In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalises the poorest. For our part, we want to be a small leaven of unity, communion and fraternity within the world."

Speaking at yesterday's Mass of Inauguration, Pope Leo XIV called on us to respond with love and fraternity in response to the social and economic problems of our time.

Spoke to BBC Radio London for @cafod.bsky.social on how world leaders can honour #PopeFrancis - not with words, but with action on the issues that were closest to his heart: debt justice, fair tax, wealth redistribution, climate action and building an economy that serves people and planet

@CAFOD #Jubilee2025 panel at IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings today explored solutions to the debt crisis that is trapping hundreds of millions in poverty. @Martin_M_Guzman spoke to the key problem of IMF bailouts being used to pay private lenders rather than invest in development

Pope Francis saw and spoke to a world in which the economy no longer serves ordinary people, inequality is soaring, and our natural world is in crisis. I spoke to @skynewsrss.bsky.social for @cafod.bsky.social on the legacy of a Pope who criticised an “economy that kills”
