The Space of Being the Bad Object by Sarah Blake My monster fits in my pocket, but when we’re relaxing in the evening, watching TV, he sleeps on my chest. I like police procedurals where they catch murderers. (I like the American ones especially.…

I have a new (very) short story out at Lost Balloon! It’s about a monster who lives in a woman’s pocket and quotes Alexander Pope to her. My son informed me that I’ve written a PokΓ©mon storyβ€”I never realized PokΓ©mon was for pocket-monster!

Cinderella's Stepsister Speaks of Love

In the night, in whispers, my mother told me that love was not always the most important thing.
But when I was young, I didn't believe her.

I was angry all the time. It was like waking too early from a nap and snapping at everyone.

My mother told me to gather my clothes and I turned to my new sister, younger and amiable, and said, "You do it."

But eventually the world showed itself in all its limitations.

When the opportunity presented itself-the sharp knife and the shoe and the chance at the unrelenting freedom that wealth could grantβ€”I looked at my foot

and it looked grotesque to me. The heel unnecessary. The smallest toe, too.
