What a week getting ready to celebrate Int Women's Day! I started the week at the British Embassy Vienna, where I had the pleasure of meeting Ambassador Lindsay Skoll over a G&T. I joined an inspirational panel of women to discuss the green and tech revolutions at Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Finished the week at Churchill College celebrating Women in STEM, meeting more impressive women at all stages of their careers

🏔️ Research from Scripps Oceanography scientist Lia Siegelman finds undersea "storms" are melting Antarctic glaciers from below. Researchers also identified a positive feedback loop in which ice shelf melting caused more ocean turbulence, which in turn caused more ice shelf melting.

With current pledges, the world's on track for 2.6°C of warming in 2100 compared to preindustrial levels.
10 years ago, before the Paris agreement, it was 3.6°C
20+ years ago, we thought it would be 4-5°C
So 2.6°C is better, but the problem is that climate impacts are way worse than we predicted.

This session aims to explore the application of ML methods in ocean science, with a focus on advancing our understanding and addressing key challenges in the field. Our objective is to foster discussions, share recent advancements, and explore future directions in the field of ML methods for ocean science. A wide range of machine learning techniques can be considered including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, interpretable techniques, and physics-informed and generative models. The applications to be addressed span both observational and modeling approaches. Observational approaches include for example: - Identifying patterns and features in oceanic fields - Filling observational gaps of in-situ or satellite observations - Inferring unobserved variables or unobserved scales - Automating quality control of data - Modeling approaches can address (but are not restricted to): - Designing new parameterization schemes in ocean models - Emulating partially or completely ocean models - Parameter tuning and model uncertainty The session also welcomes submissions at the interface between modeling and observations, such as data assimilation, data-model fusion, or bias correction. Researchers and practitioners working in the domain of ocean science, as well as those interested in the application of ML methods, are encouraged to attend and participate in this session.

Line graph time series of 2025's daily 2-m temperature in the Arctic compared to each year from 1958 through 2024. There is a long-term warming trend for every day of the year. There is also large interannual variability and a clear seasonal cycle.
Record high temperatures are currently being set across the northernmost portions of the #Arctic. In fact, it is effectively ice-free on the Atlantic side of the Arctic all the way up to about 85°N latitude! This includes record low sea ice around Svalbard.
