theoretically the best practice is to just register a domain and use subdomains for private nets but thats only realistic for businesses (who are already gonna have a domain)
RFC 6762 suggests .internal .lan .corp or .home but its only because ICANN doesnt grant delegations as TLDs, and then the official ruling actually changed to .home.arpa as the official "private network" TLD in RFC 8375
and im not using that in my network lol sorry its ugly as fuck
also its pretty crazy that it's 2023 and ppl cant agree on a best practice for unregistered TLDs in private networks
i used to use .local at home for the longest time until i started introducing devices that use Bonjour/mDNS/Avahi, and its such a shame because it looks so pretty
why would you even use the 192.168/16 or 172.16/12 prefix for private address allocation when 10/8 networks exist, i only use 172.16/12 prefixes for tunnel networks or some other kind of vnic
