"basic feminist aspirations would require a radical overhaul of society and the worldwide reactionary backlash is driven in large part by the gains of feminism in the last 60 years"

Yeah, it has long been the case that adult-oriented businesses have to be careful or risk the wrath of everyone from prosecutors to payment-processing companies, but "prominent social media company owned by world's richest person swiftly became world's largest CSAM producer" produces no reaction.

i think it would benefit all queer spaces to be more open to having discussions about allonormativity and amatonormativity - the assumption that all people feel sexual attraction and romantic attraction, respectively, and want them in their lives

Nice bit of digital humanities here - using AI to transcribe more than 32,000 manuscripts in the space of a few months. But with two years of preparation in training the model and creating standards for automating manuscript transcription

I dislike how there are still people that act like pixel art is some outdated artform. The existence of 3d doesn't make pixel art outdated. It is like saying that oil painting became outdated when photography was invented.

I think it is why a lot modern fantasy stories don't feel all that fantastic to me. Everything gets explained, so there isn't any room for the fantastic.

Also, it is interesting that many of these older stories don't bother with extensive world-building or explanation. They just present the fantastic as is, with no explanation or justification. Oppose to modern fiction, where it is common for things to be extensively explained.

I have been reading Book of Fantasy edited by Borges. It has been interesting to read older fantasy stories. Many of them straddle the line of being fantasy, scifi and horror. E.g the story House taken over, I imagine today people would likely see it as a horror story than a fantasy one.

I think Americans fawning over party-state systems because they see a couple of rich people being arrested without understanding any of the context need to calm down a bit, because a party-state is exactly what the Republicans are going to give you if you're not careful

Bracing analysis of the rise of the far-right in Germany: "there are widespread right-wing extremist networks within the security services, the police, and the armed forces. Europe-wide networks of fascists are operating unhindered. Something is brewing. If we don't react now, it will be too late."

But lo and behold! I found myself famous. Frankenstein had prodigious success as a drama, and was about to be repeated, for the twenty-third night, at the English Opera House. The play-bill amused me extremely, for, in the list of dramatis personce, came
"β€”β€”β€”, by Mr. T. Cooke." This nameless mode of naming the unnameable is rather good.
On Friday, 29th August, Jane, my Father, William, and I went to the theatre to see it. Wallack looked very well as Frankenstein.
He is at the beginning full of hope and expectation. At the end of the first act the stage represents a room with a staircase leading to Frankenstein's workshop; he goes to it, and you see his light at a small window, through which a frightened servant peeps, who runs off in terror when Frankenstein exclaims "It lives!" Presently Frankenstein himself rushes in horror and trepidation from the room, and, while still expressing his agony and terror,
"β€”β€”β€”" throws down the door of the laboratory, leaps the staircase, and presents his unearthly and monstrous person on the stage. The story is not well managed, but Cooke played β€”β€”β€”'s part extremely well; his seeking, as it were, for support; his trying to grasp at the sounds he heard; all, indeed, he does was well imagined and executed. I was much amused, and it appeared to excite a breathless eagerness in the audience. It was a third piece, a scanty pit filled at half-price, and all stayed till it was over.
They continue to play it even now.

For anyone who is like β€œthe creature is also named Frankenstein”; Mary Shelley went to see a play version of Frankenstein and was tickled that they listed the creature as β€œβ€”β€”β€”β€œ in the dramatis personae:

I feel like that there is a double standards in fantasy where you can have many slightly different variants of elves or dwarfs, but soon as you do it for furries then it suddenly becomes a problem. Feels like blatant hypocrisy to me

Furry races are no more easier than any other races. You can easy create human races by simply changing their skin colour.
