Bluetorial-Jim Watson
I met Jim Watson a few times but did not know him well. However, I was greatly influenced by his book “The Double Helix”. He was a complicated human being with some very, very bad features, but some good contributions.
What follows is my personal perspective.
1/41
Applications are open for the 2026 Zara Weinberg cohort of Leading Edge, named in honor of the incredible, brilliant, fearless @weinberz.witchlab.org.
The LE community has been truly transformative for my scientific journey and my happiness. Please apply!! www.leadingedgesymposium.org/apply/
Runs year round in this house so….
Zara Weinberg passed away earlier this week. She joined my lab earlier this year when her postdoc lab formally closed.
She was a brilliant scientist, supportive mentor, dear friend, avid music fan, rabid believer in public transit, open science champion, and above all just an amazing human.
Excited to share some research highlights today during the neuroimmune sessions at KAI2025, beautiful day in Incheon, Korea
😆
Very pleased to publish this new review with Farah Wahbeh on the role of #EBV in #Multiplesclerosis. I learned a lot writing this, I hope others find it useful too

Congrats, Itay!
A show of bipartisan support for NIH. Basically flat except for ARPA-H.
The President’s budget proposal basically ignored (as it should have been).
thank you!
Honored to receive an @alzassociation.bsky.social Research Grant for my project “Role of APOE4-driven microglial mitochondrial dysfunction”. Excited to advance our research on APOE4, neurovascular inflammation, and microglial metabolism in Alzheimer’s disease. Grateful to be #ALZFunded !!
#InterferonPower! Thrilled for our latest work @cp-cell.bsky.social! With @danielboehmer.bsky.social, we dug into tons of papers & created what we hope will be a go-to resource for immunologists & non-immunologist about type I, II, III (& IV😉) #interferons! RETRACTED ARTICLE: Parkin and PINK1 mitigate STING-induced inflammation
This is so frustrating. In 2018 I remember thinking how this paper would transform my work since we were already looking at mitophagy. I have cited this paper in 3 of my papers between 2018-2020 and probably every grant application. This guy won a 2021 breakthrough prize in part because of this work
I have
NIGMS R35, impact score 12
NIHGRI R21, 4th percentile
NHGRI R01, 7th percentile (co-I)
and it seems like none will be funded. 0/3.
PO (who has been very helpful) said "Unfortunately, I do not expect this application will be selected for funding in FY25."
😭
one of the best!
Delighted to share this perspective piece by Lewis Yu on microbial regulation of serotonin and neuroimmune interactions. Looking forward to sharing more on this topic soon 🤞 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Managed to track down some texas-style bbq in san diego. Gathered the lab to celebrate their accomplishments and keep building our amazing community!
The numbers of women in science falls substantially at the transition from postdoc to independent investigator/ PI
So what can we do to prevent this?
One initiative we now organise annually at #EACR is the highly successful 'Women in Leadership' workshop ⏬
