Very cool study of mummified cheetah feat. ancient genomes (and a nostalgic reminder of my original dream to do a PhD in cheetah genomics) (alas it was not to be) (fish are pretty cool too though)
Honestly, mostly just scramble something together myself π find using examples of other heritable traits (language or accent works well!) but would also appreciate some good readings haha
Tangentially related but always advocate the "heritable β genetic β adaptive" logic. Important first step for debunking a lot of evo psych nonsense imho
Got one about a year ago after our oven broke, which we still haven't fixed because the air fryer does the job so well π even manage to bake decently with it!
Probably depends on the person, but I find it pleasant! Not quite as droning as some other species over east...
A tick-tock cicada, Physeema quadricincta! Pretty common in the Perth area (and broader SW of WA) in summer, responsible for that near constant ticking sound you might be hearing.
Very cool!
They're pretty abundant on campus at Joondalup! And definitely hear a few of them at my place in the northern suburbs
Same! So many around at the moment
A close up photo of a tick-tock cicada, resting on some vibrantly green leaves.
One of my favourite parts about the Noongar season of Birak: it's also tick-tock season! My fave noisy bug(ger)s!

It's a great shot Judy!
A small blue-banded bee flying towards some bright yellow flowers.
Had a bit of a wander on campus yesterday (because who wants to mark exams?) for Bug Hunt Aus and saw my first blue-banded bee, which was awesome!

Very proud of our PhD student @nirjana-dewan.bsky.social for delivering an excellent talk at #AOC2025 on her white-tailed black cockatoo genomics work this morning! Looking forward to being able to share some nicely assembled genomes in the near future...stay tuned!
Anyone else planning their trip to Palau already...? #AOC2025
Recently discovered this species for the first time down at Dwellingup a few weeks ago! Pretty speccy shade of yellow
Just a few! Lucky it was exactly where I thought it was which minimised the damage π€£
Ending a conference with a mild panic attack because I left my laptop in a lecture theatre for a couple hours and forgot π³
Sounds like some figgin' great jam, Rob!
Letβs set aside the question of whether these edited animals *are* the species theyβre claimed to be - what possible argument would there BE for releasing them into a wild that isnβt the ecosystem they went extinct from? It would likely be condemning behaviorally-unequipped animals to slow death.
