OpenAI posted the terms of the deal. Reveals that it absolutely does allow for domestic surveillance. EO 12333 is how the NSA hides its domestic surveillance by capturing communications by tapping into lines *outside the US* even if it contains info from/on US persons.

.@jasmine.bsky.social captures DCโs AI vibes, where passion is flowing in enthusiasmโs opposite direction. Her โreductive two-line summary is as follows: All the money is on one side and all the people are on the other. We arenโt ready for how much people hate AI.โ open.substack.com/pub/jasmine/...
Bad Bunny โtogether we are Americaโ
Wait hold up...
Did Bad Bunny just give his Grammy to Liam Conejo Ramos the poor kid who was kidnapped by ICE? If so amazing
The sign beforehand said "Conejo" on it too

Iโve spent almost seven years covering Meta and have had a good deal of exposure to internal work product on teen well-being. But a Friday filing in the school district social media litigation breaks some ground on Metaโs causal findings regarding social media harm.

Excellent piece on AI and student writing by @ruthstarkman.bsky.social :

Excellent read. โThese figures are impossible to understand if we rely on the political science of recent decades (โฆ). They are characters accustomed to operating in a world without limits, who draw strength from the unexpected, the unstable and the bellicose.โ
Love the idea because I despise what chasing housing wealth has done to everybody's life and brains.
Though I do feel that the success of this sort of thing requires the advanced 'Swiss' civilisation part of it
What if homeownership had no profit motive and no capital gains? Swiss co-ops arenโt perfect, but I agree: when working as intended, they take wealth out of the (living) equation and allow people from different social strata to live side by side (and under one roof).

So inspiring to see @karenhao.bsky.social in conversation with @rajiinio.bsky.social at the AI and Society event @ Berkeley. We need more formats like this in the Bay Area! (and beyond)

January update from the normative philosophy of computing newsletter: new CFPs, papers, workshops, and resources for philosophers working on normative questions raised by AI and computing.
โThough still rare in America, the model reflects the striking idea that fundamental problems of politicsโpolarization, apathy, manipulation by special interestsโcan be transformed through radically direct democracy.โ

โWe noticed something (โฆ). Wherever in the world weโd sent a reporter, whichever corner of the technology landscape we were covering, the holders of all of that money? Men. All of them. Every. Single. One.โ

Something from our story on Metaโs content moderation rollback: the groundwork for it was being established before the 2024 election. And employees say a key push was Zuckerbergโs grievance that Meta had inadvertently restricted the virality of a post he wrote about blowing out his ACL.
weird
Smearing is caring in Hollywood. Once more terrifying to see how coordinated media attacks and well-oiled PR machines are deployed to alter public perception.

Clio enables bottom-up discovery of patterns by distilling conversations into abstracted, understandable topic clusters. It does so while preserving user privacy: data are automatically anonymized and aggregated. only the higher-level clusters are visible to analysts. www.anthropic.com/research/clio
Loved this one by @carolecadwalla.bsky.social about journalism, power, and ignoring your workers when theyโre in front of you *with* a loudspeaker in hand.
(Favorites include the description of Mr. Sunde as the dad of the detective - yes to the coffee pot and the volvo - and the PS note at the end.
Beautiful and compelling: โDamion Searls, who has translated a Nobel laureate, believes his craft isnโt about transforming or reflecting a text. Itโs about conjuring oneโs experience of it.โ
