The doormats reflect José’s thoughts on institutional policies – that they should be visible and accessible at the entrance of an institution. These doormats will eventually be worn down by time and passage, and, like institutional policies, they’ll need to be updated and replaced.

🤔 How can we make our spaces feel more open, inclusive, and human? ‘Welcome Isn't a Doormat’ was created by artist José García Oliva, and you’ll find one at each of Metal’s sites, with one additional mat to travel wherever our work goes.

Connect & Create: Empowering People Through Art - Metal Culture An award-winning creative wellbeing initiative in Southend that brings people together through the transformative power of art.

We’re excited to share our redesigned programme of art and creative wellbeing: Connect & Create, run in partnership with Southend City Council.

It offers free art-based wellbeing sessions + art therapy designed to support mental health, reduce isolation, and build community.
