The writers who have "it" aren't the ones who never struggle.
They're the ones who stay
when the work gets quiet
uncomfortable,
and unfinished.
Craft isn't talent.
It's attention.
And attention is something you can choose.

Plotting isn't control. It's care for your creative energy.
This episode is about why finishing feels harder than starting, and how a simple map can help you get there.
If it isn't scheduled, it isn't protected.
Especially the things that matter most.

Why your story matters—yes, yours.
Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s true.
Today’s episode of Habits of a Writer is for every storyteller who wonders if their voice is “enough.”
It is.
🎧 Episode 11 is out now → Why Your Story Matters
I have so much work to do, but it just kept getting cooler and cooler 😀
Quote reads Stayin silent won' protect you from judgement-It only guarantees your story never gets heard. On pink background with podcast microphone.
You don’t owe the world perfection.
You owe it your truth.
My story is unfolding as I type it. Even with all the plotting I did, there are still surprises that make me forget I am the writer and allow me to lose myself as a reader. It's like being present on days 1-6 witnessing God as everything begins for the first time. It's child like awe inspiring.
This space is for the storytellers in transition.
For the women who’ve lived enough life to know it’s time to tell it YOUR WAY.
I’m Portia, writer + host of Habits of a Writer, and I believe every woman deserves to see her truth in words.
Here, we write for healing, growth, and legacy.
The Power Decade
Your 50s are a power decade.
You’ve lived, learned, survived, grown…
Now you get to create from a place of clarity.
Nothing about you is “late.” You’re right on time.
Life in Your 50's: Chasing Dreams at Any Age
A reminder for anyone who needs it:
Your dreams don’t have an age limit.
Some of your best chapters won’t start until your 50s — because now you get to build from experience, not pressure.
I watched so much my sons had to go watch it to see what the fuss was about. LOL
I agree...the lyrics are deep.
Think I'll go watch it again. 😁
We should all be this courageous...following our own path and not looking for validation or to fit in.
Let’s be honest, marketing your book can feel…awkward.
But here’s the truth: your story deserves to be seen.
Episode 7 of Habits of a Writer is all about promoting your book with authenticity; no sleaze, no spam, just storytelling.
🎧 Listen now and start sharing your work with pride.
"Why Do Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ear" was one of my favorites. I read it to my kids also. It was a folklore tale and the rhythm of it inspired me. I wanted to tell stories in that same beat.
Keeping the tradition of writing in November, I am working on the last half of my novel with a goal of a 30,000 word count this month.
Snacks are within reach...midpoint is plotted...time to wreak some havoc.
Happy writing month!
Thank you! I will definitely keep you in mind for the future.
Ideas are everywhere—books, conversations, people-watching. So many writers get stuck waiting for the perfect story before they start. As an indie author writing women’s coming-of-age fiction, I’ve learned the magic happens when you stop chasing perfection and start writing what’s on your heart.
We’re the generation that grew up analog and learned to thrive digital.
We’ve got stories worth telling — and I’m here to make sure we tell them.
I’m Portia, host of Habits of a Writer, helping women build habits that keep their creativity alive and their voice loud.
