Yeah, the game has way too many mechanics and only explains a fraction of them... I'm not the biggest fan of the Edmund McMillen Humor™ either, but sometimes it can be funny. Black Mage is a weird case because it feels okay once you have access to Firestarter, but I'd say once you get Freeze, Fire IV and Flare, it becomes IMMENSELY more fun
