And he's nothing if not practical; almost the opposite of Bronwyn, in that he plans out a lot and always comes prepared, while she sorta... Wings it a lot 😂

— most of that time either, so swords are still common, and guns relatively rare, depending on where you are. But swords are still very much the popular choice of weapon!

I don't really have a specific century, because it is a fantasy setting, but it's vaguely late medieval. They still use longswords, and wear chain mail and plate armour; guns are relatively new! They've been around for only the past 15-20 years or so, but there hasn't been a major conflict for —

— so much that it weighs him down, relying on magic to protect him for the most part. In a world with few other magicians left, it's a surprisingly good strategy!

His style is both subtle and outdated; he still dresses like the wizards of old, almost in refusal to change his ways, but he dresses all in dark colours to show his mourning for all the people he lost in the war.
Well fitted robes under some relatively basic armour; enough to protect, but not —

— included in any of my planning or outlines, but it may happen in a future instalment, rather than current DoTS!

It definitely costs her more!
Psychologically, anyway; Bronwyn never really knows peace, and her body becomes a reflection of that. By the time she starts to worry that she has too many scars it's too late to reverse them.
I'm not certain about her losing a limb, it's not something I've yet —

She does have access to healing, so her injuries don't always put her down for long; but I don't want healing, even magical, to be neat. She gets cut, she gets a scar.
When Bron becomes reckless, later down the line, she gathers a lot of scars because she relies on the fact she will simply heal.

I really want Bronwyn's injuries to be lasting. She starts out with almost none, but gains scars as time goes by; most recently she acquired a scar on her left shoulder where she was grazed by a musket shot!
I have some notions about her losing a limb in the future — but they're still unformed!

I've spent a lot of time studying Hema, and even did some modern olympic style fencing when I was younger, so I'm hoping the sword combat comes across well in DoTS; it's pretty important to the story!

Fake/ BOT accounts. Damn you, auroco...

They're obviously scams. They offer to be a "beta reader" or scrape just enough information from you in DMs, then show you "artwork" (usually AI) and try to charge you for it, or they try to talk you into "commissioning" them.

Getting real tired of having to block so many fake / hot accounts 😑
Every time I make a post about my word count or progress, I get replies from these accounts with few recent posts, then ALL their replies are "hey, what stage is your writing at?" "What genre do you write?"

My first draft was far shorter — only about 60k or thereabouts — so I'm glad to see it's already shaping up to be longer! I'd much rather reduce down than try to bulk out.

I'm aiming for 80-90k range at completion; but if current length is anything to go on, it might end up closer to 120k! 😁

It is in this snip — from the very beginning of her training, in fact the very first time she uses magic at all!

Magic requires emotion to work, it's as much art as science; and Bronwyn has a lot of strong feeling, so learning that control, the balance between too much and too little, is tricky.

Got some more writing done this weekend at last! Up to 50k, a huge milestone! I'm only 10k off of Draft 2's full length and not yet halfway into draft 3.

No worries! Honestly, WSpit kinda snuck up on me, so I've really just reused an old pitch 😂

If she still has her magic, she would 100% cheat to win! If the games are rigged, there's no shame in cheating to win; really it's the only way...

Bronwyn would be a bit nervous of it at first — but Reha would drag her to the most insane rides, and after a while she would give in and end up enjoying it!
She would get very competitive over stuff like dodgems and carnival games; she wouldn't think much of the food, but then when does she ever?😂

It's possible, even probable, that eventually the Nordskeans will interfere and help Westereach and Kelmar regain their independence; but if that happens, it's years down the line. Not even sure if that would be covered in the story of Bronwyn, or would be in a subsequent series.

— it's exactly stable enough to continue living in this stalemate. The world is still recovering from the Mage War; literally they are still rebuilding places that were damaged or destroyed, where they can. While this period continues, none of the nations want to go to war with each other.

I have specifically and deliberately avoided the idea that Bronwyn will overthrow the Empire. That story, while great, has been done; and frankly, she doesn't have that in her. So the empire is here to stay in terms of that sort of rebellion.
That said! How stable is the Empire? The answer is —
