Of course, as a subtitler first and foremost, it goes without saying which version I prefer. :)
(And that my collaborators at Studio Ghibli and Aura deserve a ton of credit.)
That was a last-minute change that came to me out of nowhere after struggling for ages to come up with something satisfying, which makes me particularly proud of it.
Based on what I’ve read around the internet, “Your presence is requested” and “You’ll forget in time. You should.” were most memorable for a lot of people, but I’m elated that my personal favorite “Godspeed, soldier” made it through as is.
Especially Mark Hamill, a hero since childhood whose poster was hanging on the wall behind me the whole time I was working on the movie. Imagine my surprise to find out he’d be voicing lines I’d wrote!
Finally got around to watching the English-dubbed version of “The Boy and the Heron.” Having supplied the base J-to-E translation (adapted from my English subs) for the dub, which seems to have been used mostly in its entirety, it was super surreal to see my words spoken by such an illustrious cast.
