Reporter CRISPR screens decipher cis-regulatory and trans-regulatory principles at the Xist locus - Nature Structural & Molecular Biology Here SchwΓ€mmle et al. develop CRISPR reporter screens to map transcription-factor-regulatory element interactions at the Xist locus, revealing a two-step mechanism integrating developmental and X-dosage signals to initiate X-chromosome inactivation.

⚠️ Paper alert: Using a novel CRISPR screening approach, we mapped the entire regulatory network controlling Xistβ€”key for X-chromosome inactivation.
πŸ‘‰ We discover how sex and development signals are decoded at a single gene locus.

SNPs are not that informative (although they do associate with risk, and risk is what insurance companies care about I guess). But I disagree with the argument that just because we allow other data to be used by other companies, we shouldnt worry about DNA data. It's not all or nothing.

While helping out on a cool genomics project recently, I came to realise I’d been taught a pretty big inaccuracy about the events that occur at fertilization. I suspect that almost everyone reading this has the same misapprehension, so let’s do some learning together: 1/

Amazing documentary, and a strong slap in the face. If you eat fish, make sure you know where it comes from.

It is sad that even basic research needs to be defended with utility. For me, basic research is in the same category as art: civilized societies can't do without it, because we all want to know who we are and what our place in the natural world is -- questions that only science can answer.

With International Women's Day coming up before too long, any chance someone is building a gender pay gap bot for Bluesky like the one that used to exist on that other app? 😁 www.bbc.com/news/uk-engl...
