Beneath the thin layer of oxidized (read: rusty) iron dust that blankets the planet, a lot of Mars is hues of grey and black. Drill holes are a great way for us to see this! π π§ͺ
An absolutely wonderful account with many images from deep sea dives, for a moment of marvel in your day.

Opinion: Growing kelp may appear like a simple strategy for removing atmospheric carbon, but the practice has many pitfalls.
Detail of βMineral Foldβ (2023)
βMineral Foldβ (2023) is a small sculpture I made with deconstructed rapakivi granite. Fired to 1280Β°C, some minerals are still intact while others have slightly melted.

Fun fact: βRapakiviβ is one of only a few Finnish loanwords to the English language, of which the most famous one is of course βsaunaβ.
Rapakivi granite as found in Kirkkonummi, Finland.
Rapakivi granite after having been fired to 1000Β°C in a kiln.
A favourite to work with: Rapakivi granite.
βRapakivi is a Finnish compound of "rapa" (meaning "mud" or "sand", while rapautua means "to erode") and "kivi" (meaning "rock"), because (..) exposed rapakivi crumbles easily into sandβ
I fire the rock to 1000Β°C before using it.

Thanks! Iβm new on this platform and thrilled to find out here is something like #PhycologyFriday π
Sea palms - *Postelsia palmaeformis* - on a Northern California rocky shore. This kelp species looks sort of like a miniature golden-brown palm tree, with a thick, stubby stipe (~ trunk) topped with a cluster of long blades (~ branches). Amazingly, its closest relative is the bull kelp, *Nereocystis*.
Itβs #PhycologyFriday! To celebrate, like and pin the βAlgal Awesomenessβ feed. It auto-curates posts about algae, serving up all kinds of phycological goodies from science to art to food. bsky.app/profile/did:...

Tidevann at Huuto Gallery, 2019.
Tidevann (Norwegian for βtideβ) is a project about changes in natural processes. Many of the materials used in this project are found in the intertidal zone: seaweed, stones, salt and water.

Fond memories - In 2017 I attended an artist residency in Lofoten. From early morning to late evening I collected and experimented with local materials, it was an amazing time.
The resulting project, Tidevann, (together with Gry Rask SΓΈrensen) was exhibited in Huuto Gallery in 2019.
