Yes. That one was good, but that was two male actors, which isn't quite the same. That pairing did a lot by depicting a single black man as a good parent, which was something studios had been really 💩 at.

You're upset that they cast an actress too young to play the mother of the adult actor. Ideally, that would not happen. There's only two ways to fix that - older actress for the mother, or younger actor for the son. I'm asking which solution you'd choose.

I'm not arguing for them at all. I'm the product of one, and am aware it's rarely ideal, but remains fairly common.
I am however separating characters from actors because otherwise it'd be one more thing I'm angry about that I can't personally fix, and I've got a trainload of that already.
I personally have no mean or influence to change the film industry. Intent doesn't factor into it for me. I don't benefit at all from it, and it remains weird.
But let's say you're casting this. Do you cast the child or the parent actors as younger or older respectively? Genuinely curious.
The only age balanced castings that come to mind are Gates and Wil in TNG and Maslany and Sky Wexler in Orphan Black.
That is a casting director issue and it's well over a century old. Barring some calamity, change will be glacial, and you'll still get instances where an actor just fits a role.
Would you put this on the same level of weird as casting Ed Speelers to play a character 8-10 years younger than he is?

Also Maslany can play anything.
Even if they made her character early to mid 40's, Caleb's 22 now, so she'd be the same age my mom was when I showed up. Rosta is pretty believable playing down to 22 I think.
