A back yard part covered by ugly plastic artificial grass used in a facebook advert. Below is the text from my reply: Please nobody ever buy these shitty plastic carpets. They are literally worse for the environment than paving over it, because they also pollute it with toxic microplastics. Plants will grow up through it unless you regularly put down more poison, it can get far too hot in the summer sun, if you have pets it will end up stinking of shit and piss because there's no natural decomposition, and it reduces infiltration of rain increasing risk of flooding. And after 10 years it will be worn out and need to be replaced causing endless polluting waste. We are in an ecological crisis with wildlife numbers crashing, essential crop pollinators being wiped out, and fertile soils being eroded. We are on track for global food shortages within a few decades if this continues. If you have green space in your garden please for god's sake use it to support nature, not actively destroy it with this ugly fake grass. It takes relatively little effort to have a wildflower meadow full of colour and life, and doing so will mean you’ll actually be able to grow vegetables there in the future if you need to.
This morning I got my hands dirty planting seeds with a local community food garden, and later I got myself blocked on facebook by a company selling plastic turf for replying to one of their advertised posts with my thoughts about how awful they are for the environment. @shitlawns.bsky.social
