9/ If you don't want people like our client & hundreds of thousands of other men, women & children to be treated like this, join us on 11 March for a mass demonstration against the government's plans.
And please share this thread & details of the demo to raise awareness.
Together we can stop this

8/ It doesn't have to be this way.
The government can still change course and scrap it's earned settlement model.
They can recognise how everyone benefits when migrants who've made the UK their home feel welcome, secure and valued.
It's not too late.

7/ This is what the earned settlement model will do to people like our elderly client. It's the human impact.
But what is the benefit to wider society of keeping this man who has lived here for decades trapped in permanent limbo? We're waiting for the government to answer this question.

06.03.2026 13:40 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

6/ By then it will be 2036.
Our client will be almost 80.
He will have lived here for over 4 decades.
He will still through no fault of his own rely on the support he receives now.
ILR applications will no doubt cost far more than the current Β£3029.
Our client will still be unable to afford this.

06.03.2026 13:40 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

5/ He will likely be given a 10-year penalty for receiving this support, which until now he's been entitled to receive & was never told it would impact him in the future.
This 10-year penalty means he'll face a further decade before qualifying for ILR, taking his total qualifying period to 20 years.

4/ If he can't find this money before autumn, then our client risks being punished under the earned settlement model.
This is because he's received basic state support, unsurprisingly considering his age and his declining health.
But what does that punishment look like?

06.03.2026 13:40 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

3/ This means in a few months, aged 69 and having lived in the UK for around 34 years, our client will finally qualify for indefinite leave.
However, he'll have to pay Β£3029.
He is retired, in poor-health and reliant on pension credit. We're concerned he won't be able to raise this money.

2/ Our client was first given leave to remain based on his length of residence in July 2016. At the time, he was 59 years old.
The govt placed him on the current 10-year route to settlement, meaning if he renewed his visas on time, which he has, he'd qualify for indefinite leave in July 2026.

πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰
1/ This week, our 69 year old client was given further leave to remain in the UK.
He's lived here since the early 1990s, so has been in the UK for over 3 decades already.
We're delighted he's been given his new visa, but how will the govt's so-called earned settlement model impact him?

This is Labour's justification for ending the automatic legal duty to support asylum seekers.
Question for all organisations working with people seeking asylum. How many people have you encountered who deliberately made themselves destitute to access meagre asylum support?

Restoring order at the border speaks to Labour values. Without that, we won’t be able to do anything else at all | Shabana Mahmood Our approach, unlike that of the Greens and Reform, is in step with the British people. They don’t want extremes – they want a system that is managed and fair, says home secretary Shabana Mahmood

"Those who contribute less will have to wait longer. This includes low-skilled workers who arrived in recent years"

4 years ago, politicians lionised key workers who stepped up in the UK's hour of need.

Today, the Home Sec says they don't contribute enough.

Asylum seekers waiting over a year for claim in UK may be allowed to work under new measures Shabana Mahmood hopes to reduce number of claimants in hotels by enabling them to support themselves

We often hear from people stuck in asylum hotels that they want to work.
Granting asylum seekers the right to work is therefore welcome, but people shouldn't wait a year before permission is granted.
The govt must go further & at least reduce the wait to 6 months.

🧡There’s a very obvious problem with withdrawing support from asylum seekers: what happens next? Let’s consider some non mutually exclusive possibilities…

2/ All this does is force people to take dangerous journeys.
If the govt is listening, we can tell them how to fix this.
Create safe routes for refugees to get to the UK. It's that simpleπŸ’‘
Until this happens, people fleeing war & persecution have no choice but to risk their lives seeking safety.

UK to end study visas for Myanmar, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Sudan students The ban on students from the four countries comes amid a rise in anti-immigration sentiment in the UK.

⁉️⁉️
1/ If Sudanese & Afghan nationals have secured visas to travel here & claim asylum, haven't they done exactly what this govt has asked them to?
Removing visa routes doesn't stop people from war zones needing to flee.
It doesn't mean these people are now safe.

1/ We’ve got big news: RAMFEL is now Refugee and Migrant Justice.
What started as a small advice service in an East London church has grown into 1 of the UK’s largest providers of immigration advice & a leading national voice standing for the rights of migrants, refugees & people seeking asylum.

It's great to see MPs such as @nadiawhittomemp.bsky.social opposing the government's attack on refugee rights.
It's not too late for them to reverse course and recognise that everyone benefits when refugees in the UK are allowed to safely rebuild their lives.

Refugee status to be temporary as Shabana Mahmood rips up rules on UK asylum Home secretary announces 30-month protection limit, with refugees required to leave if their home countries are later judged safe

A terrible decision in so many ways.
1️⃣It will stop refugees establishing themselves in the UK
2️⃣It will create far more than work than a beleaguered Home Office can manage
3️⃣It will not stop people needing & seeking safety
We'll say more as updates received.

2/ Such a tragic loss of life should be a source of shame and embarrassment for the French and UK governments.
These tragedies aren't inevitable but whilst governments only pursue so-called deterrence measures, more lives will be lost.
To fix this, effective safe routes to the UK need creating now.

Deaths of 22 children in Channel due to β€˜catastrophic failure’ by UK and France, NGO says Project Play finds UK taxpayers are funding β€˜record child fatalities’ and β€˜repeated violence’ against children in northern France

1/ 22 children lost their lives crossing the Channel in the last 2 years.
During this period, the UK paid France Β£473 million and authorities used ever harsher and violent methods to try and stop people crossing.
This approach has failed catastrophically.

Today, we’re writing to the Prime Minister, calling on the UK Government to abolish citizenship stripping.

Using these extreme powers, the Home Secretary can deprive some British citizens of legal rights simply by saying it is 'conducive to the public good' to do so.
