Man får själv statistik över sina data.

I point this out whenever I get the chance, not always meeting appreciation. Right on par with "saving lives", amongst others.

When trying to avoid all those traps, one almost can't talk about the topic anymore.

It's frustrating that the only options seem to be to either be disliked by one's neighbours for pointing out to them that the bike path is not meant to be driven on, or to keep one's mouth shut so they continue driving on the bike path (which they do either way, to be fair).

Contribute as test participant? Within ComCy, we are going to run empirical studies for which we will need participants. This is the preliminary schedule and geographical area. If you are interested, please check back in the future,...

Some of you have previously indicated that you might want to participate in our data collection on overtaking of cyclists on rural roads. We are looking for cyclists in all of Sweden. Some more info and a recruitment questionnaire are here (first section): www.vti.se/en/archives/...

Yes, such acts of caution are second-nature and probably a sign of managing one's level of fear such that, without the self-observing meta level activated, it can be made to feel ok, or livable, or something.

21.02.2026 20:00 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

Yes, exactly this. And even if drivers don't mean to hit people (probably mostly true, but not always), there are so many occasions where cars end up out of control, so it's just a lottery, and still I'm not too concerned, if I don't actively think about it. Bizarre, really.

Sorry to hear. I have made similar experiences, and there's enough hate on social media etc. that one isn't surprised that punishment passes happen on almost every ride. It would be totally normal to be afraid all the time. One can never know what the next pass will bring.

21.02.2026 17:34 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Yes, I agree, regarding those that pass closely "without reason" (not that there ever is a good reason). But today, atypically, there were none of those. Even though I think it _should_ feel scary to get passed at below 2 m with 70 km/h. That it doesn't shows how much this madness got normalised.

We'll run a study in October where we'll do exactly that, to evaluate whether it will affect their behaviour at all. Even though, of course, this still validates driving at high speeds close to people, with a few hours of formal education at best.

A scatterplot showing overtaking vehicle speed against lateral clearance to the cyclist during the overtake, with clearances ranging from ca. 140-300 cm and vehicle speeds ranging from 35-90 km/h, with a slight trend of larger clearances at higher speeds.

On my bike ride today none of the overtakes felt scary, and that shows me how jaded I am, having normalised heavy objects getting hurled right past me with lethal energy. I'd certainly be less cool with bullets flying past me at that distance. But somehow, cars are fine?

We have a bike shop in town who does just that. Either fix in place or pick up.

Traffic violence is everywhere and appears in all kinds of shapes. As ordinary harm, constantly normalising inconveniences to those not driving. As slow violence, always raising the threshold for outrage. And as a brutal, deadly blow, masked as "accident". It hurts all the time to see it everywhere.

Prominent climate scientist argues it's time to ditch the 'myth of neutrality' | CBC Radio Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe talks to Bob McDonald about the polarization of science and why she thinks scientists should stop pretending to be neutral when it's our planet at risk.

Our research is not neutral if only because we depend on funding. That's distributed politically by governments or "selfishly" by corporations. Conditions often include industry in-kind which favors big corporations. Even topic choices and research areas are not neutral.

Also the part "drivers see you sooner and react faster" - I'd rather have them act in a proactive manner, e. g. drive slowly enough to make sure they can stop well in advance, such that they never get into situations that rely on having to "react" quickly. I don't want to help them drive fast.

Unfortunately I agree 100%. I wish I could say the opposite. Riding in the forest or on a gravel road can make me happy, but riding in town, with violence and threats being so normalised to be omnipresent, there's no joy to be found.

We had a car, sold it 6y ago, said back then, if we feel we need one for the occasional trip, we rent one. By now I'm at a point where I basically refuse to even be in cars. The count is <10 times for the last years, aiming for zero times this year.

ComCy Comfortable Overtaking of Cyclists on Rural Roads How can we make more people choose bicycles, even outside the city?

Exactly, it's public space after all. The narrative needs to be changed. It's completely absurd to restrict everyone else, not rarely to the point of making free movement impossible. And it's appalling that this is considered normal.
