Watercolor painting of snow-covered mountains and a foreground of juniper
It snowed this weekend, and I took the opportunity to sketch Chicoma Peak en plein air from a spot I see often on my usual jog. Quick painting, with some weirdness to it, but I’m happy to have gotten out.

Pencil sketches of 13 people on plain white paper
I joined #drawingisfree for the first time today! Rapid-fire sketches of people briefly posing on zoom, timed by a playlist of songs. Looking forward to trying new things next time and expanding my skills. I’ve never thought so much about the shapes of nostrils before.

Sketch of hills and distant mountains painted plein air outside of Santa Fe.
Tripod/easel setup with Art Toolkit palette, watercolors, paintbrushes, and a sketch.
View of my plein air painting setup with chill dog hanging out.
We adopted a ~2 yr old dog almost 3 weeks ago, and this was my first time hiking+plein air painting with him! He is very chill, happy to stay near and relax in the shade. 🥹

Fun plein air sesh today. I feel like it’s taken me a long time to get to a point where I would attempt this formation, with its tricky rills and sandcastle shapes. Happy with this for a first attempt. #watercolor #pleinair

Watercolor sketch of a backlit fall tree.
Watercolor sketch of an alleyway in Mexico.
A few paintings made during demos in a zoom class I’m taking from Yong Hong Zhong, who doesn’t seem to be on Bluesky yet or I’d tag him. His classes are outstanding! I’ve learned a ton about painting light from all of these sketches. #watercolor

Thanks!!! I know I love looking at gouache paintings, and I’m not really interested in trying oils; it seems like a great medium. Soons as I find the time to learn something new 😅

Watercolor painting of Utah desert towers (the Rectory from Castleton).
Work in progress—the Rectory viewed from Castelton tower. Not so sure about how it’s going. Still needs dark tones, but a couple of areas are already overworked.

Thanks for the feedback!! I appreciate it. I thought about trying to go back in and lighten it—glad I didn’t, pretty sure that would ruin it at this point.

Thanks so much Linda. I made the blocks in one push at the beginning, then took it out every ~5 years or so, did a little to get the top done, then let it languish. Now I’m trying to power through and not keep dragging it on. I have 12 more straight rows of quilting and then just binding left to do!

A partially finished quilt draped across a table. Quilt is a simple star pattern in shades of orange, brown, and blue against a white background.
Endless mind-numbing hours spent on this thing have been good for me—better than doomscrolling, that’s for sure!! This quilt is a one-and-only; I started it in my 20s and I’m finishing it now (hopefully???!!!) in my 40s.

Just got back from a skiing trip to Hokkaido—not much time for painting, too much powder to play in—but here are two quick sketches from Japan. More to come from photos!

A favorite painting spot along the Rio Grande. Did a value sketch first, still made Chicoma Peak too dark.

Painting Myself Out of a Corner
Dang, sorry to hear about your shoulder injury. That’s interesting that painting was also involved—it seems so risk free 😅 I wrote about my journey from climbing injury to painting at a friend’s request here, and also mused on the similarities: www.broadbeta.com/stories/pain...

Backcountry skier sitting on her skis and painting in the snow.
Over on Instagram I had a carefully curated feed full of peoples’ beautiful art, outdoor adventures and photography, and pets. 🐾 Trying to move away from Meta, but keep what I actually enjoy about the socials.
Pic is from a fun day skipainting in New Mexico. #pleinair #watercolor #newmexico

I took up painting about 6 years ago when I had a very bad shoulder injury, and couldn’t climb for a couple of years! I also found lots of wonderful similarities…particularly about slipping into a flow state. Love them both, wish I had more time for everything 😊

Oh cool!! I’ve been enjoying your art but had no idea you were also a climber as well. Stunning spot to climb and paint, that looks like 😍
