365 Albums from 1986

66. Bonnie Raitt - Nine Lives

Unremarkable mix of a little bit of everything style-wise but nothing that sticks. An all-star lineup of songwriters & musicians must’ve been saving their best stuff for somebody else. It’s not bad by any means, just mediocre.

65. Matt Bianco - Matt Bianco

Funky latin/jazzy/dance pop that sounds like something right out of the early 60’s.

Matt Bianco is the name of the band. One of the original members was Basia, who had departed by this point.

Mainstream mid 80's country definitely had a lounge act vibe to it.

64. Steve Earle - Guitar Town

Solid debut album for its time. Definitely leans more into the pop country sound of those years than the stuff he’d be better known for later in his career. The title track is a good ‘un.

At some point in the 1979 season a Topps photographer must've moved to Detroit because their 80's sets are full of cards photographed at Tiger Stadium. 80T is the first noticeable year of an big increase.

This is wild. I briefly worked for Arby's in Brunswick Maine when I was in HS in 85/86 (new location that was under a different ownership group) and I never heard this story until today! Would've loved to try one of those grilled fish sandwiches.

Just peppermint and cilantro for now. If those go well I'm going to order a packet of seeds from Freeport IL for my next round of planting.

February 1981 As both readers of the blog will recall, February was the month that I was going to seek out some fun stuff from 1981 and I did just that!  ...

That's twice in one year. A few more and this might actually be a real blog again.

63. The Triffids - Born Sandy Devotional

Richly layered, mesmerizing mix with haunting vocals that remind me a lot of James. Wide Open Road is the track to check out first and it you like it dive in from there. This is a really good album. I highly recommend.

62. Great White - Shot In The Dark

I always felt like Great White was a notch above the rest of the hair metal bands and that’s certainly the case here. More bluesy hard rock than glam, this is a fine effort.

In the last ~5 years I've started picking up sets of all the Tigers minor league affiliates and by far the most fun part is seeing the managers/coaches that are familiar from their MLB playing days.

My brother reminded me tonight that I had the Warehouse album way back when because he took it from me and that's how he discovered them. I vaguely remember listening to it once and never seeing it again haha. I'll have to revisit it!

61. Husker Du - Candy Apple Grey

I think I like every band that ever claimed HD was an influence, but I never got into them myself. I never thought they were bad, I just never found them to be interesting. This might just be the album that changed my mind.

Taking inflation into account, I think you could get all 3 today for a LOT cheaper than you could in 1981.

60. ELO - Balance of Power

Textbook ELO album (and I'm guessing the reason why it was so poorly received?) Sounds EXACTLY like what an ELO album should sound like. I really enjoyed it. The critics did not.

59. Pretty In Pink - Soundtrack

One of the best soundtracks of the 80s. Not a single bad song.

I went to my senior prom about the time If You Leave was blowing up the radio. What a great time in life.

I also went to a 30th anniversary showing of the movie 10 years ago today.

Surprisingly enough this album spawned 4 top 10 hits on the country charts. Mid 80’s mainstream country was in serious decline outside of George Strait and Randy Travis from what I can remember. 2/2
